IS HE THE ONE?
The Item: Julio Rodriguez 2022 Topps Heritage High Number Clubhouse Collection Gold Relics (/99)
The Price: $149.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: With the absolute deluge of December MLB releases that appear to be just the start of a busy off-season with more still to come, I've played the waiting game on opening boxes on almost all -- but not all -- of them. One I have opened was this one, Heritage High, as it impressed me on its rookie volume (some RCs, some guys who had 2021s) and the appearance of the J-Rod stuff to be found. Why Heritage? It's more my old-guy flagship release each year ... though the 1970s designs are easily my least-favorite of all of the past decades so far and even of those to come. But the images on his cards are solid ... and this is a good example. Sure, it's pricey, but this card is a needle in a haystack in terms of pulling it and it's pricey -- but not that pricey -- vs. a lot of stuff. Heritage rookies are not going to be all that expensive in High Number as you come very close to a base set in every hobby box ... but I like that. It lets you do some old-fashioned stockpiling with the challenge really being clean copies that can be graded. (I plan to already and will ... yes, on base.) This one is a solid piece for an iconic 2022 player with potential and a long-term commitment from the team. I'll probably kick myself later for not grabbing this particular card or something like it. But I'll be watching them.

THE NEW PUSH
The Item: Roxanne Perez 2022 Panini WWE NXT -- Rookie Card (PSA 9)
The Price: $16.50 after two bids (five days remaining)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: There's a lot going on here ... because there's not at the moment on cardboard at least until Chronicles arrives this week. Right now, her only 2022 cards (Rookie Cards) are in this release along with a single card (and parallels) in Select (pricey) and then anything from Panini Instant. In all, right now, she appears on fewer than 20 total WWE cards (while Chronicles will add nearly 30) and then a very, very small of low-volume indy pre-rookie cards when she was known as "The Prodigy" R0k-C. Why does all this matter? She's the new NXT women's champ at age 21 -- and she's the babyface of all babyfaces right now whose reign actually comes on the heels of a mini WWE scandal as its previous long-running champ, Mandy Rose, was quickly fired from the company for having an OnlyFans-style site that was just too controversial for the company at this moment. (It's not like the "Divas Era" for their TV programming anymore.) So, with that, Perez gets the nod and she's already been popular -- but now the storylines with her can evolve and grow perhaps with a natural teammate-turned-rival, Cora Jade, but now with the belt on the line between two of the company's youngest stars. Perez doesn't have a single certified auto in her rookie year -- and won't in Chronicles -- so it's just the basics that get the look here along with parallels. A big part of having a new kid on the block and that babyface angle? Her first wrestling school trainer -- back when she was 16 -- was WWE Hall of Famer Booker T, who is now a commentator for NXT. The feel-good programming that should sell some fans has already started and she was on a different WWE show long ago when she was just 13 ... all of this will add to interest perhaps with the audience WWE wants to expand. The NXT card is very affordable and I'm not sure 10s here will be possible as the traditional cardboard has issues on nearly all cards (from everybody) that I have seen.

THE SPARK NASCAR NEEDS?
The Item: Ty Gibbs 2022 Panini Chronicles Clear Vision Blue /50
The Price: $24.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: He's the grandson of a Hall of Fame football coach and a 20-year-old who has had his moments -- not always good -- on the track where some jackassery probably overshadowed his success (he was the Xfinity Series champion) at times. Meanwhile, he's on the verge of making it to NASCAR's top level beginning next year. NASCAR needs some spark -- some safe spark (see details on his season here) -- but I think some jackassery is OK, too, as long as he can deliver. His earliest cards are in 2020 releases but he's got almost 300 cards and in 2022 offerings (still not RCs yet at the highest level) he's got a lot in Chronicles. I didn't price check -- I'm not that serious on NASCAR to really dig -- but I like the potential for rarer, cheaper stuff here. His autographs are pricey despite a bad initialgraph (if that) so more of the standard stuff like this with premium feels to them seem like they have potential. His past Prizm stuff and other rarer cards are all pricey, too, but he also gets my nod as I think NASCAR is a little more off the radar vs. other sports right now with far fewer releases.

BUILDING ON SEASON ONE?
The Item: Chris Olave 2022 Panini Prestige Draft Day autograph 
The Price: $199 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This former Ohio State guy hasn't had a monster season but he's among the elite for some stats this year for rookie receivers while also being pretty cheap on the ink front and that gets a nod from me here. Is this one I'd grab? Too high for my taste, really, but I think his ink is pretty soft vs. others considering he's one big game away from a 1,000-yard season if he plays. (Some injuries this year.) Considering how the Saints offense has looked vs. times in the past and his school ties, the stats and the prices looked decent to me. He stands at 63 catches for 940 yards and three TDs this year. Would I overpay? Nah, I'm way too NFL casual now but I think there could be room here if he improves upon a respectable rookie year. Prices on his stuff could get softer at times, too, with more NFL on the way delayed or even after the season. Those things won't help anybody ... except maybe singles buyers.
