ESPN's arrival changed sports ... and even that has a card

Today in 1979, the sports world was changed forever.

That was the day that ESPN launched with an airing of SportsCenter, which has become a staple in its array of networks and multimedia platforms that give us everything we need (and more) about what's going in in the world of sports.

There are plenty of cardboard tie-ins as ESPN has had its own branded card sets in the past and its past and present personalities and reporters have appeared on certified autographs and memorabilia cards. But one simple card came to mind first with a mention of this arrival.

It's card No. 133 in the 2011 Topps American Pie set that highlights the arrival of the network as a notable and memorable event in American history alongside the important and the influential. It's a set that notes the arrivals of the bikini and Sports Illustrated. It's a set that notes Sesame Street and The Price Is Right. It's a set that notes "I am not a crook" and the Rubik's Cube just as much as it notes the deaths of Steve Jobs, Osama Bin Laden and Michael Jackson. It's got Kurt Cobain and it's got Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift, too.

That card in particular is nestled between "Garfield debuts" and one for Richard Pryor's career, which also launched in the 1970s.

It's not a super-pricey card or set to own -- but it's one that offers a good look at what has led to today. For more on this set, check out this break.
