Flipper Tip: Dig up your non-rookie Patrick Mahomes cards

It's not a Rookie Card, it's not a super-rare parallel, it's not serial-numbered and it's not (obviously) a big-mojo hit.

It's a 2018 Panini Prizm Patrick Mahomes II (silver) Prizm parallel, and, most importantly, it was a $50 card on eBay on Sept. 7.

Why do I say it that way?

Well some might scoff at the fact that some people are already apparently preparing for Mahomes to assume the role of Tom Brady once (if?) Brady decides to ever hang them up. And some might scoff at the fact that the card could just be an anomaly -- a short-term bubble or something. Or, maybe even (gasp!) a fake auction result.Those things might be true -- all of them, even the next Brady part -- but a look at eBay (above) shows a graded copy selling for plenty more and a couple of different raw copies going even higher. The $50 card is the third one in the screenshot you see here -- its actual best-offer price paid obscured by eBay -- but these sales (real or not) are not alone.

A quick but by no means exhaustive search for the card shows a half-dozen of these selling for $50 or more and some for $100 on the nose. Sprinkled in between them are countless other Mahomes cards that are on Optichrome stock with all kinds of similar shiny attributes. Some are signed and cost more, some are memorabilia cards that can cost less. Some are standard parallel cards that show there's plenty of interest with plenty of buyers at $10-$20 ... and this is just completed auctions. And this is just a search including "silver" -- try it without and the results get a lot more mixed and some where I'd perhaps re-write some of this to add even more notes from the frenzied buying. Why not? Buzz's caffeine ain't yet working today -- it must be off buying Mahomes cards, too.

Active auctions?

Well, this auction is for the same type of card as the $50 example above -- except its price is far higher right now after 26 bids with plenty of time remaining. Here's one search -- it's a bit all over the place -- but they all show that there is one thing in common with these cards from the reigning NFL MVP.

Plenty of interest.

Call it a flipper tip, call it the obvious, but it seems you might have a few reasons to go re-check your stash for any cards you might have pulled that weren't serial-numbered big-mojo hits or Rookie Cards last year or, basically, anything for Mahomes.

In some instances, tastes -- and auction prices -- might be changing away from the seemingly-always-obvious stuff.

Then again, who would have thought that the crazy prices being paid for early cards of guys like Brady, Drew Brees (and let's not limit this to NFL) Mike Trout and others from just the last decade or two would look how they look today? Maybe people are buying with thoughts on the future cardboard landscape?

It's something to ponder ...
