Question: When's the last time a New York Yankees rookie arrived with barely any baseball cards? (Has it ever happened? Can that really happen these days?)
Answer: This year -- and that rookie is Jonathan Loaisiga.
The 23-year-old made his MLB debut and got his first win on Friday night, going five innings and striking out six. He only walked four and allowed just three hits against Tampa Bay -- and he almost had as many strikeouts as he does baseball cards.
Topps got him on the board for MLB cards on Saturday with a Topps Now card noting his first game, but before that he actually had fewer than 10 baseball cards -- total -- and they're all found in boxes of 2018 Onyx Premium Platinum Elite. In that one, he has a base card and seven different certified autographs -- Blue (/200), Green (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/10), Purple (/10), Gold (/5) and a Black (1/1).
That's it -- just 301 autographs to go around -- not enough to fill a section of bleachers at Yankee Stadium if they'd all been pulled from packs. They haven't.
Part of his lack of cardboard? A long and winding road that got him to New York. His stats in the minors -- he's been there off and on since 2013 and with the Yankees since 2016 -- are strong, though. He went 15-3 with a 2.60 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 147-plus innings over four seasons before his promotion.
After his big debut, Rays manager Kevin Cash compared him to future Hall of Famer and Yankees icon Mariano Rivera.
Why?
"His mannerisms on the mound, the way he’s built, all of those things,” Cash told the New York Post. “Don’t give them any ideas, though. He doesn’t need to be pitching in the ninth inning anytime soon.”
