Highest-grade copy of Punisher's debut dominating at auction

One of the highest-graded copies of The Amazing Spider-Man No. 129 is on the auction block and ends tonight with an iconic but dark Marvel star the big reason why.

No, it's not Peter Parker batting through his teen years ... it's the debut of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.

This unrestored issue has from February 1974 collected 42 bids via ComicLink and is up to $11,950 with roughly 10 hours until the auction closes. (Click here to view the auction.) The comic is a heavily graded one with nearly 7,000 slabbed at one past count but none have graded better than a CGC 9.8. These copies are carrying a big premium over lesser grades -- and you can see that as a CGC 9.2 copy also ends tonight and has barely topped $2,000.

The iconic character is a war veteran and Marine sniper turned vigilante after his wife and two children who were killed by the mob. There have been countless books for this saga with as many as four monthly comics published at the same time at its peak. In addition to that, there have been three movies -- Dolph Lundgren and Thomas Jane among those who have portrayed him there -- and a Netflix series (with Jon Bernthal in the title role) to help fuel more mainstream interest in the comic books.
