We should all know by now that 2019-20 Panini Prizm is a phenomenon when it comes to NBA cards this season -- and a global phenomenon, too, as the league with global appeal also now has Choice cards popping up now from elsewhere in the world.
If one opts to take the challenge to try and collect 'em all -- it might be tougher than ever with several formats in this release -- you'll need a total of 41 cards per player. That's a basic card and then 40 parallels -- and there are technically more as some players have photo variations (but we'll leave those be for now).
Zion Williamson is a clear and present force in this year's version -- however, he's not alone as it's a huge 300-card set of past and present players as well as rookies. That's a factor that also makes the challenge an interesting one, too, in that everything gets so spread out. Case in point? Not every version of even Williamson has surfaced and hit eBay just yet -- and he'd be more likely to show than, say, Kevin Huerter ... the guy I seem to keep finding in my packs.
Here's a look at what's out there for everybody in 2019-20 Panini Prizm ... and there are handy links to find the boxes, too.
SILVER PRIZM — Found in ... hobby, retail (all), FOTL, Choice, Fanatics, Fast Break
Despite all of the dazzle and the scarcity of some colors, these might arguably be the go-to out of all of them -- or at least the preferred choice of the collecting masses because they can actually find them. Silver Prizms -- just the standard reflective color -- can be found in the most pack formats (volumes vary) and that means they can be pulled. Despite a larger print run compared to others, these are also more likely to be the most-traded (and volatile) slabs of the bunch, too. These are the Prizms of the everyman if you ask me, though it seems the mania is mostly about the rookies -- at least based on all of the Silvers I've pulled. eBay highs here have been as much as $1,899 for a BGS 9.5 Williamson ... and, remember, it's not a numbered card.
--
BLACK (1/1) — Found in ... hobby boxes
This one already has been pulled and sold at least once -- reportedly for $55,000 not long after release day. Unlike some brands that have a hobby/retail split, this color is only found in hobby boxes if you're focused on an AC/DC card. (You know, "Back in Black" here ... or my caffeine has worn off.) This rare color should command some big cash for other names, too -- compare this to other 1/1s we'll see later here.
--
BLACK GOLD (/5) — Found in ... hobby boxes
Only four other copies of this card exist out there in the wild. This one was spotted on eBay -- not slabbed and with an iffy and with a photo where I did my best to clean things up. But that doesn't matter -- it's sitting at a cool $27,900 after 39 bids. The scarcity is the driver here but I'd expect that there will be other surprises to be found price-wise as more show up on eBay. There are so many players with strong followings -- ones you might not expect, either -- around the world.
--
BLACK SHIMMER (1/1) — Found in ... FOTL boxes
Forgive the image quality here -- there are only so many that have surfaced so far and the key names should command big bucks just like the Black version. Of course, the Zion might command more as it came from a pricier FOTL box and it seems that a good chunk of those might be hidden away closed or flipped without opening. The longer it takes for key names to appear ... could that inflate the price? I'd think it could be possible as it seems anything is possible these days with hot brand and rare pulls. The high sales for any of these so far is $4,995 for a Giannis. Not bad, considering he's not a rookie (just the MVP) and $5,000 for a Kobe Bryant.
--
BLUE (/199) — Found in ... hobby boxes
When's the last time you saw a card limited to this many copies sell for $2,350? That's the high so far here -- and it wasn't even graded. I'd think that the simple Prizms with bold colors might command more than you might expect in some cases as I think some collectors might prefer simple looks over some of the dramatic textures you can see up.
--
BLUE FAST BREAK (/175) — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
The Fast Break format has its own texture applied to it and a slightly different volume through its rainbow, but there's still plenty of demand. This one doesn't have as much out there (yet) and a Williamson hasn't sold on eBay yet, either that I've found, but a number of other guys have sold for $150 and up -- $375 for a Luka Doncic. Asking prices for Williamsons are as high as $2,999.99.
--
BLUE ICE (/99) — Found in ... hobby boxes
Asking prices for this Blue version of this former Blue Devil are a tad higher -- $3,999.99 at the peak -- and actual eBay sales are around $3,000 ... just another reason those boxes are breaking heavily every day.
--
BLUE SHIMMER — Found in ... FOTL boxes
Blue clearly means green so far this year for this guy as eBay completed sales show a price of $3,400 paid for this one despite the fact that it's not serial-numbered. Now, there's a chance that somebody somewhere thought this might have been a rarer other version, but at the same time you have to wonder whether the print run on these is comparable to -- or maybe even less than -- the others considering the limited nature of the FOTL boxes.
--
BLUE YELLOW & GREEN — Found in ... Choice boxes
If you like extra razzle with your dazzle then you might like these Choice box inclusions with stripes atop the texture for this one in the Choice boxes, which are smaller and made for the Asian and Australian markets this year. These aren't numbered but they're still $1,000 cards so far on eBay -- and, again, you have to wonder how rare they might be compared to other formats that are not numbered in this release. That matters a lot in a high-demand scenario, especially when it's a global game and a big name ... but a (sort of) regional distribution.
--
BRONZE FAST BREAK (/20) — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
These rarer cards are only found in the Fast Break boxes and this parallel seems to have a more modest demand despite the scarcity -- or at least compared to the Williamson-mania. (Don't worry, he's in there.) This is a texture that we've seen elsewhere, like in Spectra, and it's actually one this collector likes -- so it really just comes down to colors. (Green still applies with Zion in any shade.)
--
FAST BREAK PRIZMS — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
These standard cards aren't as pricey as the parallels ("Duh, Buzz," you say.) but they add dazzle and the variations on key rookies are pushing $1,000 on eBay in some instances. There does seem to be some confusion among eBay sellers on what to call some of these various textures but I'm just rolling with it here. (If you pull Williamson or other key guys, it's all good.)
--
GOLD (/10) — Found in ... hobby boxes
This rarity of parallel is a simple one, but it's a color that has historically been a strong one in this brand and in a few others. (It also looks pretty good for this player's career color scheme, too.) Interestingly, it looks like no Williamsons have yet surfaced from hobby boxes and made their way to eBay. This should be a popular color when they do.
--
GOLD SHIMMER (/10) — Found in ... FOTL boxes
The only one of these showing up on my eBay searches right now carries a $19,999.99 price tag. As Stan Lee used to say, "'Nuff said."
--
GREEN — Found in ... retail display boxes, gravity, blasters, multi-packs and Walmart hangers
These aren't the priciest of the colorful Williamsons out there, but they've equaled $100 bills of late on eBay (actual sales) and as high as $400 (actual early sales) and they are found in pretty much all retail versions of Prizm out there. The Greens fall one per blaster (and sometimes more) based on what I have seen, so consider your odds on Williamson at one in 300 boxes? It's interesting to ponder what prices should be comparing the odds to the prices paid for basic cards with popular releases like this one. Compared to what people are paying for the standard cards for Williamson, these seem under-priced considering the ballpark odds of finding him.
--
GREEN CHOICE (/8) — Found in ... Choice boxes
These are rarer pulls and asking and active auction prices reflect it on eBay. For example, a Ja Morant pulled in China sits at a cool $1,225 after 34 bids on eBay with a ton of time remaining.
--
GREEN ICE — Found in ... Fanatics boxes
The Fanatics boxes (click that link) are pretty hot right now as they include an autograph or memorabilia card every time and also include a dozen packs. These Green Ice Prizms are only found in those boxes and they could end up being among the rarer Ices -- I just don't think there would be more of these boxes vs. Target or Walmart Ice versions.
--
GREEN PULSAR (/25) — Found in ... blaster boxes
Maybe something's wrong with my search skills at the moment I write this (where's my caffeine?), but I didn't see a single Zion out there on eBay in this color. Sure, it's a rare card, but these are found in blaster boxes ... seems like people need to get ripping instead of flipping if Zion isn't anywhere to be found yet. Why? Check out the price on the next one.
--
GREEN SHIMMER (/25)— Found in ... FOTL boxes
The asking price here for one of these right now on eBay? A cool $5,599.99. The only one among completed listings? A cool $3,999.99. I'd bet these end up being rarer than the print run indicates in terms of actual cards available as I'd expect FOTL boxes more likely to be stashed -- at least compared to blasters. Get ripping on both versions, people!
--
HYPER — Found in ... hobby boxes
This texture is one that has a more orderly feel to it, but that could help its appeal as it's just not as crazy-looking as others in Prizm. It's not numbered and the asking prices are lower for now ... but that could make this one a bit of a sleeper among the non-Silver, non-numbered options.
--
MOJO (/25) — Found in ... hobby boxes
A number of these rarer cards have already been pulled and sold on eBay -- around $5,000 raw -- so that means there are only so many others out there to pull, too. Will prices go up? It seems likely seeing prices on others here -- but I'd only bet on that for sure with slabbing and high grades involved.
--
NEBULA CHOICE (1/1) — Found in ... Choice boxes
This is a rarity that looks better in-person vs. in a scan but that doesn't really matter. There's big demand here as even this particular card already has come and gone on eBay ($465) since I started working on this piece today.
--
NEON GREEN FAST BREAK (/5) — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
These might carry my favorite look of the bunch among the Fast Break parallels and there are only so many to go around. So, if you don't jump on one when you see it ... you may not get other options. This rookie, for example, presently has an $899.95 asking price. (There are others who are higher, by the way.) No Zions yet on eBay based on what I've seen, though.
--
ORANGE (/49) — Found in ... hobby boxes
You might expect to pay more for this one than his autographed cards with a Orange texture in the mix simply because it's rarer, but I almost wonder if that's also because people prefer standard Prizms over the look of the Cracked Ice ones -- I know I do. The autographs, which have ranged between $1,500 and $4,150 were Cracked, while one of these went for $4,000 on the nose.
--
ORANGE ICE — Found in ... Walmart hangers
Walmart hangers cough up four of these in every box and there could be zero rookies in your box or there could be a few -- that's what I've seen from what I've ripped. What I haven't seen is this guy -- and they've gone for as much as $350.
--
PINK FAST BREAK (/50) — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
There's a big divide in asking prices on these on eBay at the moment -- under $5 for some players on BINs but as much as $3,500 for a RC that's not actually Zion Williamson where the serial-number matches his uniform number. That same rookie is leading the way among some of the eBay completed sales right now -- a couple hundred bucks -- because Williamson has not yet arrived. Don't worry ... he will.
--
PINK ICE — Found in ... Walmart mega boxes
These drop pretty heavily in every mega -- 10 cards per box -- so you will find this key rookie one in roughly 30 boxes. They're not numbered, but Williamson has been pushing the $400 mark -- and it seems that the mega boxes have not (yet) reloaded at retail like blasters. (At least in my area and experience on the hunt.)
--
PINK PULSAR (/42) — Found in ... Retail boxes
This color and texture has the potential to pay off huge if you land a key name -- just look at Luka Doncic's versions from last year -- since it's not super-rare, has an appealing color, a not too-complicated texture and comes from a format where people might not dig in first since there aren't a ton of extras in every box.
--
PURPLE (/75) — Found in ... hobby boxes
Another bold and clean option from hobby boxes, this one has sold for around $2,500, though asking prices are as much as double that among active auctions.
--
PURPLE FAST BREAK (/75)— Found in ... Fast Break boxes
So much for the simpler Purple being in bigger demand (I've been wrong before). ... this one has sold for $5,999.95 in recent weeks on eBay. Again, "'Nuff said."
--
PURPLE PULSAR (/35) — Found in ... retail gravity boxes
I'd almost bet that the retail gravity boxes might have a lower print run than other formats -- only Target uses them that I have seen and you won't be able to pick off these boxes via the chain's website like other formats. Either way, these are rare cards, so when you land a big name among these, you'll know it. It looks like this one has gone as high as $4,000 on eBay. Not a bad retail pull at all.
--
PURPLE WAVE — Found in ... Blaster boxes
Another of the easier inclusions, this one still sells for around $300 somewhat regularly. That pays for a few blasters ... even at the premium prices people are getting when they flip them.
--
PURPLE ICE (/149) — Found in ... hobby boxes
The most-recent sale of this one on eBay when I looked? A cool $1,425 -- and other copies of the card have sold for even more.
--
RED (/299) — Found in ... hobby boxes
Current high asking price on eBay for one of these? A mere $2,500.
--
RED CHOICE (/88) — Found in ... Choice boxes
See the last one? Now check this one ... whoa.
--
RED FAST BREAK (/125) — Found in ... Fast Break boxes
Now, the asking price on this one is different ... and it shows you how all over the place asking prices can be right now. Just wait how it all will look once he's back on the court and on a hot streak. It should get even more interesting, you know ...
--
RED ICE — Found in ... Target mega boxes
I sprung for a couple of these boxes since I felt it might be the best bet for a card with some visual zing that's not the basic stuff ... but without breaking the bank with the buy. (I bricked it ... but I took my shot.) These have sold for as much as $225 on eBay based on what I have seen.
--
RED WHITE & BLUE — Found in ... retail multi-packs
These come from the retail multi-packs that include three standard packs and a three-card pack of these. It might end up being the easiest to land of the parallels overall -- one in 100 multi-packs -- and this one has sold heavily between $100 and $200 on eBay. I could see these being long-term popular cards in slabs since they aren't impossible and come from a cheaper-format pack (compared to other types) at their starting price.
--
RUBY WAVE — Found in ... hobby and retail boxes
These aren't numbered, but they don't look to be easier despite being in a couple of formats out there. The highest sale of this one on eBay checks in with a high of $450. Current auction asking prices aren't dramatically higher at a max of $650.
--
TIGER STRIPE — Found in ... Choice boxes
The only one of these unusual-looking cards sold for a cool $4,000 on eBay and asking prices in the few active auctions are as high as $6,382. It's arguably one of the more-unique ones visually so that, combined with it being only in Choice boxes, could help this one hold up over time.
--
WHITE SPARKLE — Coming soon ... right? (Just an image place-holder here.)
These have typically been found in packs direct from Panini or via its Panini Rewards program. Might there be more to come on that front for this one this year given how popular Prizm is? We'll have to wait and see ...
