It arrived after the World Series this year, but it's just getting warmed up.
One of the hottest yet more affordable boxes in the hobby right now, 2020 Topps Baseball UK Edition, is a release that is a far smaller set than any of the series it follows this year -- it's just 200 cards. But it's got parallels and other inclusions that seem to be out-pacing cardboard norms since, well, it's just not as plentiful as the regular stuff.
Each 24-pack box includes a total of 240 cards so you might even have shots at more than one copy of those key rookies in there ... and despite that they (and moreso their parallels) are selling well.
This Luis Robert red Big Ben parallel (/99) sold for $348 on eBay -- tack on $19.26 for international shipping -- and it's actually the easiest of the parallels. Others, all cards that combine to arrive four or five times per box, include Blue (/75), Purple (/50), Gold (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Platinum.
With the smaller overall checklist (just 200 cards) that means fewer common players and more key guys like Mike Trout, Bo Bichette, Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge, Fernando Tatis Jr., Ronald Acuña Jr. and others on both base cards and parallels.
That Robert isn't alone among surprising sales for simple base cards and parallels here. This Bichette went for more than $180 -- only topped for his cards by a Gold that went for just over $200. You can search eBay completeds and see a number of surprising sales for non-hit cardboard -- a combination of availability and the fact that one can't just go to a Walmart or card shop (yet) to simply grab a box.
Autographs are tougher finds here with Red cards (/3) and 1/1 Platinum sigs for just 10 guys -- a stacked lineup that includes Acuña, Trout, Judge, Bryce Harper, Cody Bellinger, Jacob deGrom, Juan Soto, Kris Bryant, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Yadier Molina. Rounding things out are 25 UK Icons inserts that have Gold (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Platinum parallels and a lineup that includes Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben (No, not Roethlisberger.) Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Prince Harry and even William Shakespeare.
Among auto sales, Molina might be the lightest player on the list for cardboard demand and yet his card pushed $600 on eBay. Meanwhile, parallel cards from the Icons sets have highs that will pay for a good chunk of a box if you land one -- if not the whole thing with the right name and a rarer color attached.
