Juan Soto adds fuel to prospecting fire in first MLB start

One of baseball's biggest prospects this season arrived on the national stageMonday night with a bang -- and now we have to deal with the explosive interest in his very low number of baseball cards for such a heavily watched player.

His name? Juan Soto and he's a 19-year-old outfielder for the Washington Nationals who hit a three-run homer off the first pitch he saw in his first start. He finished the game 2-for-4.

"I didn't think it was going to go out of the park," Soto told ESPN.com. "I just run hard, the same I do in the minor leagues. Then I heard the noise, and I know it was gone."

In the minor leagues, Soto hit .362 with 14 homers and 52 RBI for three teams this season. He had never hit more than five homers in his two previous MiLB seasons.

Soto barely appears on more than 200 different baseball cards and he's got fewer than 30 different certified autograph cards -- a tiny number for a high-profile prospect that MLB had in its Top 30 and Baseball Prospectus had in its Top 25. Baseball America was a little less sold on Soto with him at 56th on its Top 100 entering this season.

His first autographs are in 2016 Bowman Chrome where he has a rainbow of 16 autos, 2016 Bowman where he has a pair of International Ink cards (100 total cards) and then appearances in 2017 Bowman and Bowman Platinum -- that's it. Only two of his autographed cards are not serial-numbered, so there's definitely a finite amount of ink to go around right now when he might be at his hottest. His only non-Bowman or MiLB cards are fun in the 2016 Panini Elite Extra Edition release where he has fewer than 10 total cards, a base card and unsigned parallels.

Soto's 2016 Bowman Chrome Superfractor is on eBay now as a PSA 10 with a Buy-It-Now price of $50,000. His standard Chrome auto is a strong seller pushing $300 raw among active auctions, while asking prices on rarer versions are in new-car territory among active auctions. A look at completeds reinforces strong demand for his cards with so few and such dominating numbers ... before his explosive arrival in the Nationals outfield.
