Justin Turner's scarcity makes him an animal on baseball cards

He's in his eighth season as a big-leaguer but Justin Turner has finally become a bit of an animal at the plate with a career-high 23 homers and 72 RBI (so far) this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He's been a mainstay at third base for the team the last couple of seasons and with his emerging presence he's attracted some fans -- or do we call them promotional buddies? -- along the way, which probably has helped get him on the radar of a few more.

There's one problem, though. When it comes to cardboard, he's a bit of a rare breed -- and that's translated into some cash for some collectors who have found and sold.

Turner-Topps-Auto Turner appears on less than 300 different baseball cards and on just three certified autographs. He's got a lone memorabilia card and just four Rookie Cards. That's it.

The Rookie Cards can be found back in 2010 Bowman Draft (and its Chrome buddy), 2010 Topps Finest and 2010 Upper Deck, while his first Bowman prospect cards appear in 2008 Bowman Chrome when he was chasing big-league dreams in the Cincinnati Reds organization a couple years after he was drafted.

His lone ink appears in the 2012 Topps Golden Moments Autographs set (along with its Gold Sparkle parallel limited to just 10 copies) and a spot in 2013 Topps Opening Day's autograph set. His lone Relic -- a card with no parallels -- can be found in the 2011 Bowman Sterling Rookie Relics set.

Again, that's it.

The first Bowman Chrome card hasn't caught fire just yet in terms of sales -- probably because it looks nothing like him today -- but his Topps auto has sold for as much as $25.

But his earliest cards aren't the real surprises here.

His Dodgers rarities are where it's at with a 1/1 2015 Topps Update Platinum parallel topping $200 on eBay. It's not alone, either, as other 1/1s have pushed or topped $100 with other rarer cards like his red-backed 2016 Topps Heritage card commanding decent money. If you pop on over to completed auctions, you'll see a good number of sales for items beyond cards and there are a few surprises, too.
