The author of one of the greatest pitching performances in college baseball history already has baseball cards.
He's Kumar Rocker and he's a freshman for the Vanderbilt Commodores. He struck out 19 batters in a NCAA Tournament Super Regional on Saturday -- a 3-0 no-hitter that was just the eighth in the history of the event. If you need a record-book refresher, the MLB record for most strikeouts in any game is 20 and the record for most Ks in an MLB no-no is 17.
The 19-year-old won't be seen on the pro scene for a while, but he's already got a number of autographed cards for you to try and stockpile right now.
Thanks to appearances in Panini America's USA Baseball releases and Leaf Trading Cards' Perfect Game All-American products, Rocker already has more than 150 different baseball cards -- and nearly all of those are certified autographs.
He's in 2017 releases for both, including Leaf Metal Perfect Game All-American, Leaf Perfect Game National Showcase, Panini Contenders and USA Baseball Stars & Stripes. For 2018 releases, he's found in USA Baseball Stars & Stripes. His USA presence is highest in both total cards and higher-volume possibilities, while Perfect Game cards tends to be low-volume across the board. His Contenders presence is the smallest with less than 10 cards in all and five of those are 1/1s.
Rocker went 10-5 with a 3.50 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 87.1 innings pitched this season for a school that has produced MLB pitchers David Price, Walker Buehler, Scott Sanderson, Rip Sewell, Mike Minor and Sonny Gray. He only walked two in the gem and he was the first Vandy pitcher to go the distance for a no-no in 48 years. (And it was an elimination game.)
The 6-foot-4 255-pound right-hander was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of last year's MLB Draft, so he won't be eligible again until 2021. He had been projected to be a first-round pick but opted for school. Want more to collect? His father is former Auburn football standout Tracy Rocker, who was a third-round draft pick of Washington in 1989. He's now an assistant coach for the Tennessee Vols.
