LeBron James' first Sports Illustrated cover jersey hits auction

The Chosen One's jersey is on the auction block and it could fetch six-figures when it sells next month.

Seventeen years after LeBron James made his Sports Illustrated debut, the gold St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish jersey he wore for that photo and a game that night is being sold via Runnemede, N.J.-based Goldin Auctions.

"Few players transcend their sport and few collectibles transcend the industry," said Ken Goldin the auction-house founder. "When you combine those two elements into one item records are broken and that is what we fully expect with this historic high school jersey of the world's most recognizable athlete of this generation."

The photo shoot for the Feb. 18, 2002, issue of the magazine took place on Feb. 3 that year before James scored 32 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 74-49 win. The jersey's mesh can be matched from the cover on the front lettering and, according to Goldin, MeiGray has photo-matched this jersey to Getty Images photos from the game. It's believed to have been worn for much of James' junior season and also been authenticated by Resolution Photomatching. James gave the jersey to its seller, who also will write a letter attesting to its history.

Bidding opened at $25,000 and stands at $34,000 after four bids. The auction will run until Oct. 19. You can see the latest bids and find more info by clicking here.
