A giant in the field of comic books is gone.
Stan Lee -- one of the creators behind a number of iconic super heroes and teams such as Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, Black Panther, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, Silver Surfer and so many more -- has died. He was 95.
For years, Lee was a writer, editor and the publisher at Marvel Comics and in recent years he had worked in film, TV and other pop culture realms as a creator while also being king of cameos in many of the Marvel Studios films. His comic book career began in 1939.
"I used to think what I did was not very important," Lee told the Chicago Tribune in 2014. "People are building bridges and engaging in medical research, and here I was doing stories about fictional people who do extraordinary, crazy things and wear costumes. But I suppose I have come to realize that entertainment is not easily dismissed."
His comic book creations are too many to name and he's had plenty of cardboard appearances, too, in both the non-sports world and in the sports realm as collectors clamored for significant and interesting inclusions in their packs, too.
Lee appears on nearly 150 different certified autograph cards with an appearance in the 1998 Marvel Silver Age Sketchagraphs set being one of the earlier ones -- one that came with a sketch from him -- while other appearances have included a Fans of The Game card in 2004 Donruss baseball packs where his fandom of the Los Angeles Dodgers was noted on his card and more recent appearances in 2011 Topps Allen & Ginter as well as 2013 Panini Golden Age and 2015 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions. He also appeared on an unsigned card in the 2015 Topps First Pitch set, which showcased celebs' moments on the diamond.
Lee's ink also can be found in countless comic- and movie-related sets and he was a regular signer on the show circuit for years, though he became a pricier autograph in the last decade. Among the non-sports sets he can be found in are 2010, 2011 and 2014 Leaf Pop Century, X-Men: The Last Stand, Spider-Man 3, Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2011 and 2012 Marvel Beginnings and so many others.
