'Mean' Joe Greene & Coca-Cola kid to sign for collectors in Pittsburgh

If there's a "Butterfly Effect" in hobby history -- you know, a small thing that can go on to have a large impact -- it just might be an iconic 1979 Coca-Cola commercial.

It features Pittsburgh Steelers star "Mean" Joe Greene and a kid who offers him his bottle after a tough game. After Greene accepts, he throws his jersey to the kid and millions who watched -- it aired during Super Bowl XIV, which was the third most-watched game ever at the time -- just might have been suddenly interested in collecting game-used jerseys. Maybe.

But why are we talking about them today? The dynamic duo will be reunited at an upcoming signing in Pittsburgh.

The Hall of Famer and the kid, Tommy Okon, who is 47 now, will be signing together at Total Sports Enterprises (100 Robinson Center Drive, Pittsburgh) on Oct. 21.

Greene solo will be $99 for flats and minis with any other items $149, while Okon will be signing as part of a $249 package that includes Greene and a photo from the iconic commercial. They'll also do photo opps for $159 together as part of an appearance put together by MAB Celebrity Services.

Greene's Steelers won their fourth Super Bowl on that night in January 1980 finished his career in 1981 with nine All-Pro or All-AFC nods, 10 Pro Bowl appearances and two Defensive Player of the Year awards. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
