Mike Trout Superfractor sets all-time record with $3.9M sale

Move over, Honus Wagner, there's a new cardboard icon in the world.

Mike Trout's 2009 Bowman Draft Superfractor set a new all-time sales record for any and all sports cards on Saturday night with the final gavel dropping at $3,936,000 via Runnemde, N.J.-based Goldin Auctions.

The 1/1 autographed card of MLB's top star broke the record of $3.12 million for the sale of a 1909-11 T206 Wagner card set in 2016. That card had been considered the holy grail of sports cards as a small number are known to exist after Wagner objected to his likeness being used to sell tobacco. Meanwhile, the Trout is a one-of-a-kind card -- the only one signed on gold Superfractor stock.

"This event was somewhat of a perfect storm as we had a remarkable collection of historic memorabilia supported by incredible marketing and publicity during a great market for sports collectibles," said auction house founder Ken Goldin.

More than $12.5 million in memorabilia was sold in the first session of this weekend event that continues today.
