Minor league baseball cards from the past can include some weird stuff ... stuff you wouldn't imagine to be found on a baseball card. Here are some some new oddities in this latest edition of MiLB Madness.
IT'S BUBBLE BOY! (PART ONE)
The Card: Dan "Bubble Boy" Jones 2018 Grandstand Erie SeaWolves
The Buzz On This One: What's the deal here? Well, what you see on the baseball card is what I know ... he's a first-round draft pick, a Knockerball champion who went undefeated and, well, has a baseball card. (Yeah, yeah, something about tickets, too. Must be a side job.) Is this the only Bubble Boy baseball card there is? Well, maybe for this kind ...
Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can (almost) only find in MiLB.
IT'S BUBBLE BOY! (PART TWO)
The Cards: Garrett Havig assorted 2012-2021 baseball cards ... almost all with bubbles
The Buzz On This One: Sometimes a simple goofy photo makes a card jump out from the pack and one of these bubble-gum powerhouse cards did that ... and then another ... and then another and then ... you get the point with these pocket-change cards. Starting with the 2012 Grandstand card at left and ending with the 2021 Choice card at right almost all of them show this team trainer partaking in a bit of the bubbly. Why? (Why not?) It's an interesting streak considering there are a couple teams seen here over several years. (Random: I'm not 101-percent sure here, but based on where he's from and his name I'm pretty sure he's related to former Atlanta Falcons guard Dennis Havig.) One thing I'm 100-percent sure of? Dude likes gum ... at least on baseball card photo day.

WELL-CRAFTED CARDBOARD
The Card: Andy Yerzy 2020 Grandstand Hillsboro Hops
The Buzz On This One: I can't tell you a thing abut this player other than what his stats say here, but that's OK with me as I bought this just to say this design is not the norm for a MiLB team set. While it's a little busy, it's also a pretty strong design for any set of cards out there at any level. It's got a hint of some 1954 Topps going on but with modern touches that give us action and a feature photo feel all at once. Then there's a facsimile auto (not always used well) that kind of works along with the team's secondary logo and then a nameplate -- it's busy but balanced. The backs also have some ornate filler that, well, just doesn't feel like the norm, either, while also offering up all the basic info that one needs on a card. In short, I dig this one.

TWO FOR THE DOGS
The Cards: Dizzy Johnston 2018 Grandstand Arkansas Travelers & Deuce 2021 Grandstand Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Buzz On This One: If you're a regular reader of this series, then you know this already -- there are a lot of ballpark pups on baseball cards. With the dog days of summer here but ending soon I figured I'd present two with the card backs where you can learn all about them with a click. Do it ... I double-dog dare you.

DRAWING ATTENTION IN DAYTON?
The Cards: Heater & Gem 2015 Dayton Dragons ... Roofman 2014 Dayton Dragons
The Buzz On This One: Yes, there are mascot families out there in MiLB and in MLB, too, to some degree. That's nothing new or anything unique in baseball card terms -- but like the pups, this is just me presenting some here to clear out my stacks of stuff waiting for their turn -- and these two (as well as their team's logo and unis) are well-designed. But Roofman? Well, that's just weird ... read that card back. I'm not even going to try and say more than that.

REMEMBER ME?
The Card: Chris Weinke 1993 Dunedin Blue Jays team issue
The Buzz On This One: Buzz picked up a lot of MiLB team sets on the cheap last year and it was pretty uneventful save for a number of trivial finds and then names who used to be promising on the field. This card? It's more of the oddball variety not only with its larger size -- 3-by-4 inches -- but also as this former Blue Jays prospect is the former Heisman Trophy winning Florida State Seminoles QB who was a fourth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2001. That all happened years after this, though, as he was a MiLB player from 1991 to 1996. His baseball career never included a cup of coffee in MLB but he did play one full season in the NFL and then was a reserve in limited action during four more seasons after that.

NEWS TEAM ... ASSEMBLE!
The Cards: News Team, Weather Team and Magic 104.1 (Radio Team!) 2005 Oklahoma Redhawks
The Buzz On This One: Anchorman's News Team assembled with epic results -- and they do have cards -- but a dig into some past sets yielded not one, not two but all three of these unusual gems all in one spot. Why? I dunno ... and I'll leave you with that. These are textbook examples of the weird stuff you will find in MiLB team sets.
