Minor league baseball cards from the past can include some weird stuff ... stuff you wouldn't imagine to be found on a baseball card. Here are some some new oddities in this latest edition of MiLB Madness.
YOU'RE NOT IMAGINING THIS PART I ...
The Card: Tooth Fairy 2016 Choice Reading Fightin' Phils Mascot Set
The Buzz On This One: Buzz did a double-take when spotting this card with a single word on my mind after seeing this ... why? Well it's a sponsorship spot for a mascot of sorts who cleans the bases and has a child from the crowd work with her to get the job done at games -- and she's also part of a mascot group while having a message to everybody, of course. The weird part? She's not alone ... keep reading.
Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can (almost) only find in MiLB.
... AND PART II
The Card: Evil Candy 2016 Choice Reading Fightin' Phils Mascot Set
The Buzz On This One: Every hero needs a villain, right? I'm not 100-percent sure of the storyline here beyond the obvious. Why did I not research more? They're not alone -- in this card set we might have a world record for mascots in a MiLB set ... because it's a 15-card release solely for mascots. Among them? Screwball, Mama Screwball, Papi Screwball, Blooper, Quack, the Racing Veggies, Phil-Lee, Change-up The Turtle, Bucky The Beaver, Hillbilly Hoff, Crazy Hot Dog Vendor, the Mascot Band and a checklist. I actually didn't realize these cards were from a mascot set when I found them ... now I think I need them all. (They're $8 a set via the team's store, by the way.) Why? Why not?

BRIAN KENNY'S FAVORITE BASEBALL CARD (MAYBE)
The Card: N.E.R.D. Squad 2021 Florence Y'alls (Andrew Rueter, Jared Cheek, Max DelBello, Connor Dwyer, Chad Rhoades)
The Buzz On This One: Analytics, man! "The N.E.R.D. Squad is the first analytics and software development department in independent professional baseball. They collect and use data and analytics to further enhance player development and scouting techniques for the Florence Y'alls." I think I've maybe once seen a card for somebody in this realm, but a squad with a nickname for a team with an epic name of its own? Take my money ... This card is so weird I'd grade it. (There are many others in line before it, but I would.)

A TACO, A HOT DOG AND AN ICE CREAM CONE WALK INTO A ROOM ...
The Card: Homer The Hot Dog 2016 Grandstand Birmingham Barons
The Buzz On This One: Tuesday was National Taco Day and I thought I had a taco mascot card -- they totally exist -- in my stash waiting to show up here just in time for that but ... I didn't. In this case, you get one with the Barons' gaggle of racing mascots that do have baseball cards. (The same team that once had Michael Jordan to sell some cards.) The "Fastest Hot Dog in the South" made it into my stash on the cheap since this 1986 Topps homage had multiple characters showing ... and, importantly, there's that taco.

A LEGENDARY COACH
The Card: Ferguson Jenkins 1989 ProCards #1513
The Buzz On This One: With some hunting, you can often find past MLB players in team sets or on cards that were found in packed-out form (not just team sets) like this one. Hall of Famers? Not as common. Jenkins was in his second year as a coach here and this clean photo is perhaps far stronger than a lot of the other photos you'll see in this massive set. They took care of the legend on photo day.

THE NAME GAME!
The Cards: Tony Perez, Chris Carter, Brooks Dunn, Jeff Katz, John Odom, Tony Perez (again) and Ray Liotta assorted cards
The Buzz On This One: A Hall of Fame baseball player, a Hall of Fame football player, a country music duo all in one, a film producer who has worked on comics and for ESPN, "Blue Moon," that Hall of Famer again and a Goodfella can all be found in MiLB team sets over the years -- and they are not alone. More deep thoughts? Brooks Dunn's nickname had better have been "And" ... and Odom's autograph is so detailed it's one to have. (Really, go look.) If you made it this far ... just have fun with cards. Monetary value isn't the only value.
