New Wild Card football set arrives packing high-end heat

This isn't the original Wild Card football ... this is a high-end football card experience.

That means plenty low-volume ink for recent NFL Draft Picks and college stars and plenty of big-money auctions over on eBay when it comes to singles for 2021 Wild Card Matte, a new release that dropped on Friday as the first of two editions this month. The Black (BLK) boxes arrived first and White (WHT) are set to show later this month with three autographs in every pack (full details here) and 18 packs per overall box.

The lineup of signers is limited to only 22 players with Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Devonta Smith, Zach Wilson and more among them and that has some strong asking prices and sales for their stuff over on eBay -- and not just for autos. There are three autos and three other cards per pack -- and everything that's not a base card (those are /349) is numbered to less than 75 copies with most far lower.

The stars so far might be the Thumbagraph cards that combine a thumb print with ink. A 1/1 Wilson card has a $9,999 asking price over on eBay -- but it's listing photo (like many out there for this one) could be better. (The dark BLK design for these is definitely a challenge to scan/photograph -- but poor photos are not helping you here, sellers!) Meanwhile, a Lawrence /5 Thumbagriph (at right) just ended at $2,599 after 31 bids, showing definite interest in the No. 1 pick. They aren't alone as more than a dozen cards from this one have asking prices above the $1,000 mark in active eBay auctions while nearly 30 more fall between $999 and $500. Actual completed auctions aren't as brisk just yet beyond that new Lawerence but a number of sales are above the $100 mark in early auctions.

Keep in mind that 18 autographs per box give sellers some safety in numbers here -- but with that many autos per box and only 22 signers, that could mean some scorchers. Check out the player list and breakdowns here and you can see there's a good shot at landing some rare stuff for those key names -- stuff with the potential for some red-hot sales of those Red Hot Rookies and more. BLK is the opener for an even rarer lineup (volume-wise) in the WHT boxes, too. A sampling of the goods found on eBay so far (at least ones with decent photos) can be seen in the gallery below.
