"Everybody comes from somewhere" is one of those phrases that applies well with team sports like baseball and football where players often have a trail of cardboard from their times with all-star squads, college teams and pro careers, but it's not quite as easy to find that trail of cards for professional wrestlers.
Newly announced WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry does have one, though.
He's a former Olympic power lifter and his first card appearance came not long before he ever set foot in a WWE wrestling ring -- and a couple years before he was on his first card as a wrestler.
His first card is in the 1996 Upper Deck Olympicards release, which is an all-time greats set for Olympians up to that time along with some newcomers who might make a mark in the present day. It's a rich collection with really strong photos in the base set, some strong inserts, holograms and even trade cards for autographs, which all have helped the wax boxes become much rarer than the typical Olympic releases of that time.
Card No. 104 in that one is of Henry, who was a two-time Olympian, a three-time national champ and had enough honors and records to have the nickname of the "World's Strongest Man" stick to this day. He joined the WWE in 1996 and had been a regular performer until last year. Most recently, he had been working behind the scenes with the company. On Monday, he was named as one of this year's WWE Hall of Fame inductees who will be honored during WrestleMania weekend early next month in New Orleans.
As for wrestling cardboard, Henry made his debut in the 1998 DuoCards WWF set -- like many young stars of that time -- and he's been a regular since but landing an autograph of him isn't easy -- he's got just 10 certified autograph cards. They're all only found in 2011 Topps WWE and the high-end 2015 Topps WWE Undisputed except for rare signed Relic appearances in the last two Road to WrestleMania sets from Topps.
