New X-Men variant comic book features 1986-87 Fleer homage

What happens when an homage to a legendary basketball card set meets the most-marvelous team of mutants on a rare variant cover with a big side of "Snikt?"

This variant cover of X-Men Legends No. 1 arrives only on DiamondGalleries.com later this month with Wolverine joining the 1986-87 Fleer "Rookie Card" crop as imagined by artist Matthew DiMasi. The artist's specialty? Oversized pieces that are mosaics made from broken tiles as part of his Shattered Comics works that have appeared on a number of Marvel Comics variant covers.

This is his latest for the company -- a presale will start on July 29 -- in advance of the standard edition debut of X-Men Legends, which arrives in comics shops around the country on Aug. 10.

DiMasi's mosaics can take hundreds of hours to produce and reproductions of past covers can command five-figures. "Shattered" pieces have graced covers for The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Venom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars issues for Marvel and IDW Comics to name a few.

The 1986-87 Fleer NBA set is a landmark release for basketball collectors that includes Rookie Cards for Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Dominique Wilkins, Karl Malone and even somebody more Wolverine's height, Spud Webb.
