jarryd-hayne-no-autograph-contendersIf you're a regular Buzz reader, then you know all about the popularlity of San Francisco 49ers practice squad member Jarryd Hayne. He's a former rugby player from Australia whose limited NFL time this season sparked some interest in his Rookie Cards.

With the arrival of 2015 Panini Contenders this week, there was a new twist -- the company couldn't land an autograph deal for his Rookie Tickets. However, that didn't stop demand for his cardboard after Panini America decided to release the cards without ink but a stamp -- in short-printed fashion.

A Playoff Ticket parallel limited to 49 copies already has sold for $200. (No, really, go look.) Not bad for what's now essentially a parallel base card.

Asking prices for other versions of the card are rather strong in active auctions and Buy It Now scenarios the day after the product's hobby release.

The no-autograph stamp is not unprecedented in Contenders history. It's happened several times, mostly during the Donruss/Playoff years during the 2000s when autographs became a regular expectation.

“Dating back to 2001 Contenders Football, we’ve periodically had some rookies who we weren’t able to include in the program due to the fact that the player didn’t want to sign cards, and there is a precedent for the inclusion of 'No Autograph' rookie tickets,” said Nick Matijevich, Panini America’s Director of Product Development for NFL Brands, in a statement on the company's blog Wednesday night. “In this instance, we thought we were going to be able to come to terms on an autograph deal and when we didn’t, we decided that we would include Hayne as a ‘No Autograph’ SSP that would fall as a bonus hit for collectors as opposed to having a hole in the checklist. Due to his international popularity, in addition to people trying to build the set, we assume there will be an active market for these cards.”

Turns out that there already is.
