Original Ty Cobb photo by Charles M. Conlon sets new record

A private sale of an original Type 1 photo of an MLB icon -- a legendary image taken by a legendary photographer -- has set a new sales record.

It's an original photo from Charles M. Conlon and it's perhaps his most-famous photograph of Ty Cobb from back in 1909 showing him sliding into third base. This PSA-authenicated photo set a new sales record, fetching $250,000 in a privately brokered transaction.

According to PSA, the 8-by-10 image was sold by Tustin, Calif.-based Memory Lane Inc. to an anonymous buyer.

“It’s truly an incredible price for an original photograph,” Memory Lane's President J.P. Cohen said. “Our collector really wanted that photo and we were more than happy to facilitate the sale.”

According to PSA, Type 1 images are taken from from the original negative within two years of when the photo was taken and this is the only Type 1 of this play known to exist. It was previously auctioned for $77,098 just four years ago and will be on display at Memory Lane Inc.’s corporate booth during this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago from July 31-Aug. 4.
