The last of eight seasons of Game of Thrones will be upon us next month, but the cardboard for the hit series keeps on coming with the newest set announced earlier this week from Rittenhouse Archives.
That one is Game of Thrones Inflexions -- and it includes new autographs from top stars who haven't had ink in years and have gone on to added fame in other TV and film roles.
That roster? It includes Emilia Clarke, Jason Momoa, Gwendoline Christie and many others who are all set to have new ink when it arrives on May 22.
Some of them found in this new series haven't signed in the past set often before. Clarke, for example, has gone on to have roles in Stars Wars and Terminator films and only previously had Thrones autographs in the Season 1 and Season 2 sets. Momoa, who was most recently seen as Aquaman in a few DC Comics films, had ink in Season 1 and in the Valyrian Steel release. Christie had ink in Season 2 and Season 3 sets but has more than 80 different auto cards from her time with Star Wars -- with more likely on the way there.
The success of the series has led to Rittenhouse releasing eight other sets since just 2012 and there's a strong following for the cards from the fans here. However it's also been a launching pad for stars to attract fans from other roles in other big franchises who can only find their stars' autographs in these sets.
Other Game of Thrones veterans have appeared on a few more autos and are parts of other franchises. One of them is Sophie Turner who has also been seen in recent X-Men films and will take on the title role in Dark Phoenix later this year. She's had autos in six different Thrones card releases. Peter Dinklage has been a low-volume signer in most Thrones sets and he's a veteran who has been in films since the 1990s with spots in Nip/Tuck and spots in The Chronicles of Narnia and X-Men films among plenty of other roles. Lena Headey also is a film veteran with plenty of roles beyond Thrones and she's got a number of past autos to hunt. Ironically she played Sarah Connor in the Terminator TV show (before Clarke did it on film) and can be found in Dredd, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, 300 and most recently Fighting With My Family, a film about WWE's Paige. Maisie Williams has had a heavy share of inked cardboard here and a number of other roles, but perhaps most importantly in the collector mindset will be her spot in the upcoming Marvel X-Men film, The New Mutants.
The earliest of the Rittenhouse Game of Thrones sets' wax boxes aren't the easiest finds, but later-season boxes can be had and there are pricier Archives Boxes that deliver an entire set and all of the autos all in one spot. Those past releases are worth a look when you can find them, while the new one will help you revisit them all -- but in a high-end format.
