The favorite: 2006 Bowman Draft Chrome Prospects Refractor Autograph Clayton Kershaw /500 (BGS 9.5/10)

Why this matters to me: When it comes to collecting players in the modern hobby, there is usually one card that is considered the most desirable and it’s usually the player’s first Bowman Chrome autograph. And if you don’t time it right, the card of your player may cost you more than you’d want to spend.

The hunt: I took a respite from the hobby from early 2004 to late 2006. One of the cards that helped me return was this Kershaw. I purchased a blaster of Bowman Draft at a Walmart and pulled a Blue Refractor of a hot prospect at the time, Travis Snider of the Blue Jays.  That stoked the fire and a day later I went to another Walmart (in Milpitas, Calif.) and purchased another blaster hoping to pull an autograph card of Clayton Kershaw, whom I had known for his knee-buckling curveball at the time. Just a few packs into the blaster and I spotted something shiny in the middle of the pack. Lo and behold, it was this Kershaw, serial-numbered to just 500 copies.
