Playing Favorites: Benjamin Wilson's No. 1 Oakland A's card ...

The favorite: 2013 Topps Five Star Silver Signatures 1/1 Yoenis Cespedes

Why this matters to me: I believe I have the largest collection of Oakland A's cards as well as Yoenis Cespedes (A's only). If I don't, I'd love to meet the individual that does. This card is the crown jewel of both my A's and Cespedes personal collection. I was collecting every Cespedes card I could get my hands on from 2012 to 2014. The Five Star Silver Signature Series was an amazing card (with parallels) and it was one of the first rainbows I attempted to complete. It's not my most expensive card, but it's definitely my favorite.

The hunt: I had bought each of the parallels (/5, /10, /15, /20, /25, /65), missing just the 1/1 to complete my rainbow. My Twitter friend, Chris Raines, pulled it and offered it to me. Unfortunately I wasn't in a position at the moment to buy it from him. He listed it on eBay, which bought me enough time to put some money together. I won it at auction completing the hunt and rainbow. I ended up paying just about his original asking price, no less.

The backstory: The hardest part about being a supercollector, be it a player or team, is the pursuit of everything. You can't say no to a card that you don't have. It makes you redefine the word "want" and convince yourself that it is a "need." We need food, water and air but if you ask a SuperCollector, they "need" this card just as much. The issue with being a completionist, is that it gets very expensive, very quick. I was upset when the A's traded Yoenis Cespedes in 2014 to the Boston Red Sox. My wallet and my wife, however, were not.

Final thought on Playing Favorites: Picking one card from an expansive collection is not just hard, it's essentially impossible. It's hard enough to pick a favorite kid when you only have three, let alone choosing just one card out of thousands and thousands. Much like the song that is currently playing being my "favorite," so is the card that just arrived, or the one I'm cataloging or placing into a pocket protector. The reason I chose this one was because the hunt was very unique. Then to complete a very low-numbered rainbow, each numbered /65 or less was a task ... a very expensive (and rewarding) task.
