Retro Spotlight: 2011 Panini Michael Jackson set delivers hits

The King of Pop would have been 60 yesterday, but the thriller himself can be collected in many ways when it comes to cardboard alone.

The most-recent release that comes to mind (and the most-official one, of course) when it comes to cards for Michael Jackson arrived back in 2011 when Panini America released a set that brought him to cardboard in the modern era via two waves. They're ones that include his first memorabilia cards and other cards that might surprise you.

Why? Boxes of this one's second wave aren't that pricey, but they can deliver some big hits -- and we're not talking about music.

The memorabilia cards in this release are a first for Jackson and they're not every-box pulls -- but they're also not impossible. They're commanding pretty hefty prices on eBay among active auctions, while a number of completed auctions have gone for more than the price of a few boxes. It's not just memorabilia cards, either, as PSA-graded base cards and parallels seem to have some interest, too, as do some ungraded parallels. (Though, ironically, there aren't a ton of the cards graded -- asking prices are far higher than the sale prices. Perhaps there's potential here?)

The basic set consists of 190 cards and that includes subsets for Achievements, Decades, Top 10s and Number Ones. Each of those has Gold, Diamond and Platinum parallel cards. Also in the mix here are inserts called Charted Albums, Jackson Live and Sequins in addition to the memorabilia cards that come in a pair of sets, Eclectic Threads and Televised Fashions. Each of those also have multi-piece memorabilia cards, but there appears to be just 12 different memorabilia cards in all to chase.
