An iconic painting used to make a Hall of Famer's only Topps baseball card during his playing career is on the auction block.
It's the 3- by 5-inch painting by Gerry Dvorak used for the 1953 Topps card of Satchel Paige and it was saved by former Topps executive Sy Berger after the set was made. This one was one of a small selection of paintings that previously hit the auction block in 2010 via Robert Edward Auctions.
That's also the auction company handling this sale, which wraps up in the next couple of days.
Slabbed and authenticated by SGC, this piece carried an opening bid of $10,000 in this new auction and it presently sits at $22,500 after 12 bids. (Click here for the current bidding.) The piece previously sold for $58,750 as did a few other paintings from the memorable set. This present REA auction also includes pieces for Warren Spahn and Pee Wee Reese.
"Interestingly, since that historic auction, only three other 1953 Topps painting from the Sy Berger collection has resurfaced in the marketplace," said the auction listing. "We know they're out there, but apparently collectors are keeping them. This stunning artwork has been consigned directly from the original purchaser in the 2010 auction."
The 1953 Topps set used paintings for 274 cards and some of the biggest pieces from the set sold in the legendary 1989 Topps auction at Guernsey's. The Mickey Mantle painting sold for $121,000 back then.
This set also is the basis for another art set -- the 2018 Topps Living Set -- that is very popular right now and uses pieces from artist Mayumi Seto.
