Some irreverent art news leads Buzz to unique mailday

This one is admittedly off the radar of many collectors, but they might be drawing a few more fans from beyond the typical card crowd soon.

"They" are Beau and Bryan Abbott -- aka the Baseball Card Vandals -- and they're got a new book coming on March 5. Baseball Card Vandals: Over 200 Decent Jokes on Worthless Cards! will showcase a good chunk of their original art all in one place -- and all of them started with an old trading card from the past.

Their "decent jokes on worthless cards" are "posted fresh daily" on Instagram and on their website (FYI: some doodles can be NSFW), and it's something that they've been doing since 2012. They've carefully crafted more than 4,500 pieces in that time and they almost always sell out at $35 a pop every day.

The news of the book (it's under $20) recently prompted Buzz to take a look at what might be up for grabs, and I dug cheap to find a cheaper specimen that evoked a chuckle from me back when I first saw it.

They took a 1990 Score Tyler Houston Rookie Card -- he was the No. 2 overall pick in the 1989 MLB Draft and it took him until 1996 to debut so you can assess any original "value" there -- and turned it into an homage to Whitney Houston unleashed on the world back on Sept. 3, 2013. On the back there's a sticker with the number for the creation -- this was No. 556 -- and the signatures of the twins who brought it to life. It arrived in a top-loader with a personalized price guide page wrapper and a pack of 1990 Bowman that yielded Will Clark and Mark McGwire as highlights.

Why this one? Well, secretly I had hoped this one would be included in the book as it's a bit more unique (and mainstream) than other pieces -- I'm smelling up arrows! -- but mostly thought the expression worked well atop the original face. You can see the packaging, the details and the autographs on my new cardboard as well as a few (clean) others -- and, yes, they went there on a 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card (and charged a premium).

How can one sum up their work beyond seeing it? Well, here's how they described their work ...

"Well, a long time ago these two artistically inclined weirdos picked up their Sharpies and their most mediocre cards and began scribbling strange jokes all over them in endlessly shameless and shameful attempts at making one another laugh. Inexcusably, they’ve continued to do this into adulthood, and they recently decided to share their work with the outside world. The result is baseballcardvandals.com, the most ardently irreverent, beautifully nonsensical, brilliantly gross and sometimes surprisingly sublime thing on the Internet."
