Baseball cards are big business and it's been that way for a long, long time -- but CNBC and its Squawk Box morning show recently took a look at Topps leading into the World Series.
David Leiner, Topps' VP/GM for Global Sports & Entertainment, was in their studio for a chat that revealed how baseball cards have evolved to a new level of interest and excitement and offered at least one statistic that might be of interest to the most-dedicated collecting-minded people.
The last three seasons of baseball cards have added some new dimensions with Topps Now and its card apps, for example, and those things have helped get collecting cardboard into the mainstream even more. Across all of its brands, Topps said there have been approximately 550 million cards made just this year, helping show that there's plenty of interest with powerful newcomers such as Ronald Acuña Jr. and Shohei Ohtani drawing headlines along with hobby favorites across all types of products offered by Topps.
Among those headlines this summer? The six-figure Ohtani Bowman bounty and its subsequent $184,000 sale at auction. Before this season, of course, there were the magical arrivals of Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger last year as well as the Chicago Cubs finally winning it all just two seasons ago -- all of those have helped traditional cardboard thrive and spark even more interest with real-time creations and sales via Topps Now. Recent auctions of classic vintage cards like those from Mickey Mantle also continue to break sales records, sometimes for millions of dollars. In 2018 baseball cards are back in the mainstream and may be more popular than ever.
