Steiner stop includes a little mystery and a surprise or two

Remember yesterday when I mentioned finding a little something something while waiting in the Topps redemption line at the National Sports Collectors Convention?

This is that.

The Steiner Auctions booth near Topps is one that was right alongside the redemption line as it wrapped around the booth on my day of working the lines at the show. Steiner had a simple mystery bag that delivered far more than I had expected it would on Thursday. The signage seems simple enough -- and it is -- a Hall of Famer autograph of some type in an envelope for $15.

But why did I say bag?

The purchase also came with this large Steiner-branded Jumpman bag that typically sells for $40 (according to its tag) as long as people registered for Steiner auctions. (I'm already on the mailing list.) I figured the bag alone was worth the $15 alone (despite not seeing its tag), so I broke out the wallet -- all while standing in line for my Topps pack.

My mystery auto? A Ted Lyons Hall of Fame plaque postcard already with a JSA cert. He went into the Hall back in 1955 and did plenty in the game after his career as a manager and scout. He died at age 85 in 1986 so he's not found on any certified autos beyond cuts. He's not a pricey auto, but I wasn't expecting to break the bank for $15. It felt like a simple win as I didn't already have him in my stash.

I tucked the auto back into its envelope and then into my main roller bag for protection and then I wrapped the sizable duffel bag's straps around my bag's handle and worked my way through the line and around the show floor for the rest of the day with it in tow. I never looked inside, figuring the bag was bonus enough.

My very last purchases of the show got dropped into the narrowly unzipped the Jordan bag -- again, I never looked inside -- and then I got another surprise when I reached in later to pull out a box. There was a top-loaded Fanatics-authenticated signed photo of a Cleveland Browns quarterback inside -- it admittedly took me a minute to figure out who I was looking at with an obscured jersey number -- this one being Brian Hoyer. Also in the bag? A Steiner pen with what I assume is some MLB game-used dirt built into it, a Steiner-branded phone card-holder accessory and an auction booklet. (That I would have expected.)

The bag got me to dig in by itself and this small surprise at the end of a fun show had me acting like a little kid ... it made me think there might be a few other kids (or big kids) out there who might want to see how this goes for them before the show is over.

Worst-case scenario? You get a Hall of Famer's autograph for $15.
