His first 10 games as a Chicago Cub have already generated headlines and some new ink in the MLB record books -- as well as a good about of Topps Now cardboard, too, if that's your way to measure popularity.
But Seiya Suzuki has a good amount of other cardboard you might want to chase, too, and there are even Superfractors out there to be found for this new MLB standout.
But first? Some basics. He's hitting .429 (12-for-28) this season with four homers and 11 RBI. He's got nine runs and a pair of doubles in there, too, along with nine strikeouts but nine walks to perhaps even things out. (How that looks so far in the record books? Click here.) In Japan as a member of the Hiroshima Carp he hit 189 homers in nine seasons of Nippon Professional Baseball play before coming to America. His Topps Now cards -- the newest dropped today above -- have averaged 4,562 copies sold so far and the newest will put him over 20,000 cards sold this year.
But, like Buzz said, there are Superfractors out there waiting to be found.
He's got cards in both of Topps' 2021 NPB releases you can easily chase (or cash in on if that's your thing) with 25 in Chrome and 13 in the basic set. He has a base card, a 1986 Topps homage insert and a Prismic Power insert. The 1986 card has a base card and four parallels -- Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and a 1/1 Super -- while the same lineup applies Prismic as well as the third insert set he appears in, Stadium Sluggers. Just like NPB scorcher Roki Sasaki (still in Japan and putting on perfection shows) and his Chromes, the lineup for Suzuki includes a base card and nine Refractors with Purple (/299), Aqua (/199), Blue (/150), Green (/99), Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and a 1/1 Superfractor to be found.
So, yes, that's four Superfractors that exist for a new MLB star with both fans here and in Japan potentially vying for those rarities and waiting for future Cubs cards.
The standard Topps NPB set also has a base card for him with parallels -- Gold Rainbow, Rainbow (/150), Vintage stock (/99), Blue (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Rayfoil versions -- there aren't that many of these cards out there either but boxes can still be found. Joining those are a 1986 insert just like the Chrome (but not Chrome) with four parallels -- Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Rayfoil. They aren't, however, his only Topps cards. If you opened 2017 Topps Museum Collection and found World Baseball Classic Relics he was among those players and addition to all of these he also has plenty of BBM cards from Japan. His Japanese RCs appear to be from back in 2013 -- the same year as That Shohei Ohtani Guy if you've heard of him.
As you might suspect, there's plenty of high-dollar asking action on all of his cards right now over on eBay more on his Japanese gems but Chrome action is quite strong for cards almost a decade into a player's career. Check out these Chrome highs and flip over to completeds. It's pretty impressive ... in any language.
And, just a thought ... not one of the Superfractors have surfaced yet.
