The biggest comic book in history is on the auction block -- and there's already plenty of bidding action.
Bidding action on Action Comics No. 1? Shocker.
This CGC Conserved 7.0 copy of Superman's debut from June 1938 is pushing $300,000 with two weeks to go on the auction block over at ComicLink -- and the reserve isn't even yet met.
In fact, according to the auctioneers, "the Overstreet Price Guide lists this issue in 7.0 Universal condition for $855,000 but today would likely sell for well over $1 million. At this point, even a low-grade Universal (2.0-3.0) example would ballpark at about $500,000. With a bright look, largely unblemished images, straight edges and minimal corner wear, this is the most attractive Action Comics No. 1 example that a collector will find at this price."
This one has already captured 46 bids and stands at $275,000 -- the next will put it at $290,000 for the book, which has had "professional repairs done to improve [its] structural integrity and long-term preservation" with "no pieces added or removed, and no color touch, trimming, or married pages."
The lofty expectations of the auction house are backed up with a look at record-book headlines on this one. In 2014, one of only two CGC 9.0 copies of the issue sold for $3.2 million, according to published reports at that time, while the other 9.0 copy sold for $2.16 million in 2011. (It's also a book that's been reprinted -- and counterfeited -- in the past, according to Heritage Auctions.)
The 1,000th issue of Action Comics is set to arrive later this year along with the 80th anniversary of this issue, which is believed to be as limited to as many as 50 surviving copies today in unrestored, original condition. CGC has graded unrestored 41 copies -- nothing above a 9.0 with the most-common grade being a 3.0 -- and another 27 copies that have been restored.
