Surprise SPs for key newcomers heat up 2022 Topps Series 2

They weren't on the checklist, but they are in there.

The formal arrival of 2022 Topps Series 2 today unleashes something that collectors might not have expected to see when they previously saw the recently revealed checklist -- short-printed variations for notable newcomers Julio Rodriguez, Spencer Torkelson and Bobby Witt Jr.

And there may be more notables to come as the annual set's rarer finds start trickling into the open market and on eBay.

The good news for those wanting to find them is that they are not the rarest variations -- they are among the easier batch of rare finds -- but the prices on eBay for early copies found are impressive. Rodriguez's cards are $699 and $899 for early asking prices. Torkelson's are a little more in reality considering his slow start and Witt is somewhere in between. Again, these are mere SPs (code on back ends in 865) while the rarer "Super SPs" are much tougher (code on back ends in 866). Flagship releases typically have around 100 variations between the two types so there's plenty to find that might not be these three rookies.

Buyers might remember the interest in the Series 2 "bat down" Ronald Acuña Jr. SP Rookie Card -- a still-pricey and iconic card from 2018 -- and then the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Series 2 RC that also arrived in 2019 packs.

Boxes of 2022 Topps Series 2 include one Relic or auto per standard box, while jumbo boxes typically include an auto, a Relic and a manufactured Relic. SPs are typically also found in retail formats.

Rodriguez, 21, is hitting .270 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 56 games, but has a league-leading 17 stolen bases for the Mariners. Torkelson, 22, is hitting .190 with four homers and 13 RBI in 51 games for the Tigers. Witt, the 22-year-old son of a former big-leaguer, is hitting .227 with seven homers and 29 RBI in 54 games for the Royals.
