Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.

Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...

GOOD TIMING FOR MY FIRST 3D CARD
The Card: Pete Alonso 2019 Topps 3D #475 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Bought:  No, I didn't buy this one in the wake of his Home Run Derby dominance -- I grabbed this one in the off-season since the price was right (around $30) for a good rookie from that one. Since the Derby, this one has sold for a lot more raw and then some in higher grades but it's still relatively modest compared to other big rookies in the last few years. I didn't grab this one to flip -- I just grabbed it as a good example card to have from one of these plastic-stock releases. It's my first and I do like the 3D effect that is applied here. In this case, his front arm feels closer compared to everything else.
The Grade: PSA 9

Reality Check: The pop report is more of the odd modern type with plenty of 10s but there's also nothing below my grade -- so it's a sign that these cards must grade pretty well if you rip packs and find somebody good.

You might have noticed a different approach to the newest card in a regularly appearing series from Topps.

Instead of using a pair of on-field images, the new Jackie Robinson 2021 Topps Game Within The Game card from artist Paul Jennis carries a historic twist. It uses the moment where Robinson shakes the hand of Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey after signing his contract with the team in 1945 -- his first step in forever changing MLB.

“I wanted to get Branch Rickey onto the card at the start of my planning process, but when he didn’t fit on the vertical painting, I thought it would still be impactful to get his hand into the final painting,” Jennis said. “Art is about symbolism. I can think of nothing more appropriate at this time in our nation’s history – with daily reminders that race is still an issue – of the image of Branch shaking Jackie’s hand nearly 75 years ago. Life is all about making the world better and lifting each other up, and that’s what the Dodgers did with their courageous act to sign Jackie to a contract as the first African-American player in the Major Leagues.”

The Item: Willie Mays 2021 Topps Sterling Bat Knob Relics (1/1)
The Price: $17,999.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This huge pull is an example of the possibilities in this new high-end arrival from Topps, though I'm not sure it will get that much. (But the best offer feature is there for a reason.) The number of full Mays bats out there is perhaps not what it used to be -- at least for those available on the auction block -- but they're probably not going quite that high for the full item ... but anything seems possible these days. Sterling boxes aren't cheap but they include big stuff every time and this one is among the bigger possible finds with bat barrels, jersey letters and more possible. This one is a new department here on The Buzz ... Fast Five -- a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of five items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. For some of you, it's probably common sense. For others of you out there, it's perhaps something to ponder.

This time? Five Sports Illustrated covers I'd want on cardboard now in Topps' new card set ... and five more after that.

Junior goes home ... Ken Griffey Jr. | Feb. 21, 2000
It was a blockbuster kind of move, and, while Junior's first SI cover (May 7, 1990) might be in more demand, the portrait on this one would get my cardboard nod first in the new Topps set. Why? It's just a much better photo than his debut. I'm pretty sure I saved my copy of this one from back in the day ... so if there's no card I'll survive. Junior's days in a Seattle uniform seem get more attention than his time with the Reds and that's another reason I'd do this one.

The Card: Babe Ruth 2017 Leaf Babe Ruth Immortal Collection Yankee Stadium Seat Red Spectrum (/20)
The Price: About $14
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Yes, I know this is not a bat card -- that's a piece of a Yankee Stadium seat embedded into it -- but I picked this one up since it's on the rarer side of things and also on the affordable side. Beyond that, this also showcases one of a few Ruth photos that always get me to stop and look at a card when I come across it. It's as simple as that, though I do also like oddball memorabilia cards. Chasing Ruth bats will cost more, though Leaf's estate-authorized sets have made them a little more affordable in recent years thanks to a good number of low-volume cards made among a few products.
