MiLB Madness: Spencer Strider before Atlanta, Uvalde Strong, MiLB cheerleaders and ... Dale Earnhardt had a baseball card?

Minor league baseball cards from the past can include some weird stuff ... stuff you wouldn't imagine to be found on a baseball card. Here are some some new oddities in this latest edition of MiLB Madness.
SAME SET, SECOND STAR ...
The Cards: Spencer Strider 2021 Choice Rome Braves (five copies)
The Buzz On This One: This month's item leads off just like last time with a key single from a team set that has a current big-leaguer who had a heck of a rookie year in Atlanta last season. Unlike Michael Harris, Strider had a number of Rookie Cards in big-league sets last year and he also had a lot of prospect cards (also unlike Harris) so cards like these have a lot of competition. But, I like this one as he looks like a big-leaguer other than that cap and the set was relatively cheap, too, vs. a lot of in-pack stuff by the pack or box right now. The print run on sets like this where there are multiple stars might not be on the low side for MiLB sets but in comparison to packed-out MLB cards there's no chance that the print run is in the same galaxy. I like that.Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can (almost) only find in MiLB.

LOOK AT THAT INK!
The Item: Wander Franco 2022 Topps Postseason Autographs (/50)
The Price: $3,500 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This guy's cardboard is leading the way right now in terms of the chatter, the hype, the dollar signs ... all of it. Part of that is speculators wanting in on the big MLB talent for sure, but his play last year and his new big, long-term contract all help justify the interest. Why does this one lead off here? Well, it's not his flashiest, priciest or even best card ... but in this case the sticker is perfect. His auto has a lot of loops to it and others I have seen have all been running off of it ... even on better cards. (Is this one the norm? I don't know -- I didn't look too closely at everything out there -- but keeping all the ink on the sticker should matter. (Or a better way to say it, a bad sticker can hurt.) Keep that in mind if you're dabbling to slab here. If you're ripping packs, keep in mind that jumbos have ink every time ... so, realistically, you have a better shot at Franco ink there. Ink is also in hobby -- but not every box.

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
GRADING MORE GOATs
The Card: Patrick Mahomes 2017 Panini The Rooks #RO-PM
The Reason Graded: Just like I've mentioned in past months, I've made it a focus to get most -- if not all -- of my Mahomes rookie-year cards slabbed up since I actually had amassed a few from that year. (That was mostly because I was hitting the retail clearance bins pretty hard.) This one is an insert from the stone cold -- at least back then -- Panini NFL set that was a relatively simple release and had a hit in every box yet really sat everywhere for a long time. (Why? The border designs felt pretty heavy to me but for others it may have just been too low-end.) Not that long ago, I slabbed his basic RC from this so I figured I needed to get this one into a case, too.
The Grade: CSG 9.5Grade 5 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 Total Population -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 1 1 -- 2 Reality Check: It was pretty clean just like last time as it earned one of the tougher grades from CSG. I figure once a pop report comes (sometime soon*) this should look like a pretty solid card. I don't see there being a large number of 10s coming with this paper stock and I figure a lot of these cards were probably graded in BGS or PSA slabs long before I got around to doing mine.
Keep reading for more of this month's pick-ups and new slabs for Buzz.

What's the priciest piece of Los Angeles Dodgers memorabilia ever sold?
Well, according to Goldin Auctions, it's this 1963 road jersey used by Sandy Koufax, which sold for $429,625 on Saturday night in the latest event from the Runnemede, N.J.-based company.
"The rarity of Koufax game-worn memorabilia combined with its impeccable authenticity and the fact that it was from perhaps his greatest season when he captured the Cy Young, NL MVP Award and the World Series MVP makes it truly special," said Ken Goldin, the founder of Goldin Auctions, in a prepared statement. "This event also proved a vibrant market for Michael Jordan, Mike Trout, LeBron James and Tom Brady memorabilia with lots from all of them surpassing expectations."

The author of one of the most-dominating seasons in Dodgers history will be doing a little more writing soon.
He's former Brooklyn Dodgers ace Don Newcombe and he's got a public autograph signing set for March 4 at Cardboard Legends in Van Nuys, Calif.
In 1956, he went 27-7 with a 3.06 ERA en route to MVP and Cy Young award honors -- and that was the year after he helped Brooklyn to a World Series title, downing the New York Yankees in seven games. He made his big-league debut back in 1949 at age 23, going 17-8 with a 3.17 ERA before he was named the NL Rookie of the Year. He retired after the 1960 season with a 149-90 record and a 3.56 ERA.

It's a signature that helped change the world, and it's hitting the auction block in November.
It the autograph that adorns Jackie Robinson's contract to join the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 11, 1947, and it will be sold along with his Montreal Royals contract from 1945 at the museum that carries his name on Nov. 16 in New York City as part of a sale handled by Goldin Auctions.
"There are many documents on display in museums that represent seminal moments in history which forever changed America such as The Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation," said Ken Goldin, owner of Goldin Auctions. "But most historians believe that the integration of baseball with the signing of Jackie Robinson had as great an impact on America as any other moment in history.
"In fact, Martin Luther King called Robinson the founder of the Civil rights movement. Bringing the most important baseball document and the founding document of the Civil Rights movement to auction is an awesome responsibility and we are honored to help find them a permanent home for future generation to enjoy.”

Vin Scully has been in baseball as the voice of the Dodgers for the last 67 years.
That's longer than Topps baseball cards have been regularly around. That's just a few years after the NBA was founded. That's longer than 14 MLB teams -- nearly half of of the majors -- have been around.
With the 88-year-old's broadcast career in its final stretch, some collectors might be looking to grab one of his few certified autographs -- it won't be easy.

Today's the day where everyone in Major League Baseball dons No. 42 as a tribute to the man who changed the game -- and America -- forever.
On this day back in 1947, Jackie Robinson became a baseball and social pioneer, breaking MLB's color barrier and helping change how the game was played. His actions undoubtedly helped with the civil rights movement, which had its landmark legal act nearly two decades later.
Collecting Robinson isn't easy on a budget, but there are a few options for fans.
