Minor league baseball cards from the past can include some weird stuff ... sometimes stuff you wouldn't imagine to be found on a baseball card. Here are some some new fun cards and oddities in this latest edition of MiLB Madness.
THE DUO FROM DURHAM
The Cards: Tim Robbins & Susan Sarandon 2024 Leaf Vivid Strike a Pose & Colorful Combos Autographs Clear & Prismatic Pre-Production Proofs (both 1/1s)
The Buzz On This: One of the favorite baseball films of many, Bull Durham has popped up in a few spots in a few baseball and non-sports sets from Leaf Trading Cards in recent years. These blank-back proofs are test runs for the series where this baseball set included autographs from some other baseball-related areas. There are varying colors and textures in play, so all cards are a 1/1 of that type but there are multiple versions. That has softened prices on these, but I like them and have picked up a number of them for very little. Why? I'm a collector.Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards (and other stuff) you can find in and around MiLB.

PULLED FROM THE FIELD ...
The Item: Home Run Derby X used baseball from Dunkin' Park, home of the Hartford Yard Goats (Aug. 11, 2023)
The Buzz On This: This could have made its way into my monthly Collecting Game-used series here on The Buzz, but instead, I'll break up my pair and use one of them right here this time. Why? This exhibition event took place at a MiLB venue with four former MLB players leading the way smacking baseballs around the park -- Jonny Gomes, Jake Arrieta, Dexter Fowler and Nick Swisher. I read that the baseballs were not made to be sold, so the only way one could get their hands on them was to be there ... and with one of the four names being a player I collect, I did some power-shopping and landed a pair of them from a seller in Connecticut. Why? Just to have something from the event that's tied to my player. Who smacked this ball out of the park? No idea. There's no paperwork, there's no MLB Authentication sticker ... it just is what it is. I'm surprised that this event has never had any kind of card presence and really the only thing I have seen beyond used baseballs are posters ... but even those don't seem plentiful. This was from the second year of the traveling series -- the 2022 events were international and last year they showed up in different MiLB parks -- and this event was the first on American soil in 2023. The final score between the top two teams was 49-48 ... so a lot of baseballs went flying that day.Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can find in MiLB.
MiLB Madness: A Griffey, a Junior, a pitcher who rakes + more

THE SECOND STINT
The Card: Ken Griffey Sr. 2010 Choice Dayton Dragons
The Buzz On This: This one popped up on a deep dive recently and I had totally forgotten about the father of an icon and Hall of Famer taking on a second career as a minor league coach and manager years ago. Of course, most collectors know the icon that is Junior but his dad was an accomplished big-leaguer, too, with 19 seasons in the majors that included three All-Star nods and two World Series rings as player with The Big Red Machine and then a third with the 1990s Reds, though they released him late that summer before the postseason. This Griffey's Rookie Card is in the 1974 Topps set and that was the last time he was in the minors before he suited up for a stint as a coach with this team before taking on a managerial role elsewhere for three years. He only has a few MiLB cards and they stand out from the pack vs. a lot of his big-league stuff with the Reds, Yankees, Braves and Mariners. That got me to bite here.Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can find in MiLB.
MiLB Madness: Young stars, fans' cards, cosmic mascots, cheesy pics ... Jerry Lawler & Mr. Belding have baseball cards?

PRE-ROOKIE CARDBOARD
The Card: Bo Bichette 2019 Choice International League Top Prospects #2
The Buzz On This One: With Bowman and other prospecting brands giving players cards as early as possible -- and stuff like USA Baseball and Perfect Game getting us cards before guys are even pros -- pre-rookie MiLB cards like this don't have as much oomph as they used to (though they may not have ever been super-popular) ... but I still like them. This one comes from an All-Star-style set that includes many more other notables like Bichette here and they're actually among the easier sets to find most often as most teams in the leagues sell the sets ... so there are likely more of these made than your typical sets. Nonetheless, I like grabbing anything for notables in MiLB team sets as they're easily tougher (or at least less plentiful) than anything Bowman. That's why I have this one batting lead-off ... the rest of the stuff you'll see this time is on the oddball side of things.Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards you can (almost) only find in MiLB.
