Think a lot of Project 2020 baseball cards are made digitally? Think again. (Via @kingsaladeen | Instagram)

One thing you might assume about Topps Project 2020 is that many artists do their work digitally but that's not often the case and as you can see above that's definitely not the deal here.

That's the work of King Saladeen as he bought his Willie Mays card to life for the series and he teased it via his Instagram page.

"I wanted to show some of the process behind creating my latest card," he wrote with this behind-the-scenes image. "My goal is to add to each card, add some of my swag and vision from this present time. ... This Project was unreal to bring the new-school creators to another amazing arena. Art and sports both saved my life. Blessed to show the world my vision on so many different canvas."

If you're wondering , his canvas has included plenty of things -- vinyl bears, clothing, airport murals, traditional pieces and even millions of dollars in exotic sports cars.

We touched base with this West Philadelphia-born artist for a Hobby Q&A to learn a little more about his experience in Project 2020.

The 2020 Topps Now Derek Jeter Career Retrospective baseball cards are here.

Topps' new monthly program is a little different than the standard Topps Now cardboard we would be having with an MLB season right now. These cards, which will be printed to order after a month-long window are $22.22 apiece but printed on 24-point Chrome stock with parallels also potentially found in place of a standard card in your order direct from Topps.

Jeter's moments begin at the end with the Yankees retiring his number in 2017 for card No. 1. Each card will include Jeter's thoughts on the back as well.

Derek Jeter's Hall of Fame enshrinement may have to wait until next year, but the new cardboard push is coming from Topps.

Up first? A new Topps Now line launching this Saturday with Jeter’s autograph attached on cards noting "his biggest moments and milestones" among projects that will "bring his perspective to life through one-of-a-kind collections."

It's part of plans in a multi-year deal that will include "experiential, one-of-a-kind events and limited products and Jeter will collaborate with Topps in many new ways across its physical, digital and e-commerce products." It will include the former Yankees shortstop as part of the creative process. There will be the Captain’s Collection and Jeter also take part in the One of One Club, which will give "fans the ability to create their own unique 1/1 Jeter Topps card, which will then be signed by Jeter at a One of One Club event."

The Captain's call to the Hall is already captured on cardboard thanks to Topps Now. 

Derek Jeter's first Hall of Fame baseball cards were revealed by Topps via its real-time, printed-to-demand platform on Friday with a lineup of six autographed cards paralleling the standard version.

Autographs will last until they sell out -- and might be gone by the time you read this.

Let's all act surprised when The Captain gets his Cooperstown call later today -- it will make things a lot more exciting than some who-got-snubbed or who-shockingly-got-in commentary. Those are too predictable.

Since I'm feeling a tad contrarian today, here's where I'll rattle off my take on Derek Jeter and his Rookie Cards and how the one I'd want right here, right now today is the one you see above, not some big-money, elite-graded slab.

The New York Yankees shortstop appears on more than 18,000 different cards but only eight of those -- just eight! -- are classified as Rookie Cards based on the traditional definitions. (Insert cards are not RCs. Autographs are not RCs. Even RC parallels are not RCs and so on.) And technically, the card you see above didn't arrive in the most-traditional of forms, either, as it came from the 1993 Topps Stadium Club Murphy set -- a boxed set limited to just an announced 128,000 copies which is inevitably lower than anything else -- that also does get dubbed a RC from back then.

Derek Jeter's Hall of Fame status will not be a surprise when it's formally announced next week and it seems that this was almost a given if you read his original scouting report.

"MLB Shortstop. Blue Chip. A Yankee. A Five tool player will be a ML Star +5!!" it reads from back on April 8, 1992.

And it can be yours in the latest Goldin Auctions event with an opening bid of $50,000 -- and it's not even the biggest item up for grabs in the auction.

GRAB THEM EARLY BIRDS ...
The Card: Lamar Jackson 2018 autos (any)
The Price: They're not cheap at all right now -- this slightly damaged one is $569.99 (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This isn't the best time to shop for early autographs of this game-changer, but he's a perfect example of how a ton of newcomers (or returners) to collecting with deep pockets along with people buying to hold and then sell stuff out of high-end not-readily-available boxes are helping create some crazy cardboard markets out there for hot players. And yet I'd say that this card ... with some edge damage ... is still actually priced as a bit of a steal. Jackson has put on a show this season and I'd say that any of his 2018 autos should be given a hard look but with more attention given to rarer stuff with on-card ink preferred or at least cleanly signed specimens if you're considering stickers. Why? He's got big potential right now both in what's left for this season and in future campaigns -- and somebody has to compete for the big hobby dollars once people can't grab the elite Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes cards out there. Check out the 2018 NFL boxes here for your shot to pull his ink. If you don't want to pay as much, just shop for his 2019 stuff -- it's still stiffly priced but not as tough as rookie-year cardboard.

Have you looked at your 2019 Bowman Draft card backs yet?

It's fine if you haven't -- we know you're busy looking for the new big names, their colorful Chrome parallels and, of course, their autographs -- but there's always one part of this Bowman release that can surprise with either basic stuff one might not know (since the players are new to cardboard) or some downright trivial things that mean nothing when it comes to the field of play.

It's those "Up Close" blurbs that are worth a look.

The card of top pick Adley Rutschman actually has one of the simpler and more straight-forward items on his card. He's not one of those cards who drops references to Fortnite, Taylor Swift, Coke vs. Pepsi, Chick-Fil-A, Game of Thrones or even an interest in nuclear engineering. One card even notes a top prospect who had a specific walk-up song at age 10 ... what were you doing at that age?
