Depending on your age, you might not know the name Jack Smalling -- but he wrote the book on through-the-mail autograph collecting back in the day when most autographs weren't just a click away.

While The Baseball Autograph Collector's Handbook is up to its 19th edition today with addresses for more than 90 percent of known living major leaguers, coaches and umpires inside, it's the fruits of his publishing passion -- his autographs -- that are on the auction block in one single lot coming to the auction from Heritage Auctions next month.

"Many, if not most, of Smalling's greatest successes came from trails long since gone cold, but when Smalling first took up his hobby in 1962, quite a few Dead Ball Era legends still walked the Earth," said the auction listing. "And if not the players themselves, then their children or grandchildren, pleased in that pre-Internet age that somewhere, someone still remembered the man. They were all too happy to drop a cancelled check or a clipping from an old lease into the supplied self-addressed, stamped envelope in fulfillment of Smalling's request. More than a half century later, Smalling's collection of autographs numbers in the six figures."

A uniform worn by Babe Ruth is on the auction block and it's not yet surpassed the $100,000 mark with a couple days to go before the final gavel.

There's little doubt that Ruth's 1945 Esquire All-America Game coaching uniform will get there, though, as it's estimated by Heritage Auctions to top $200,000.

And that's nothing compared to what his New York Yankees jerseys have sold for, making this one a bargain.

The call to the Hall also means new baseball cards via Topps Now. 

Two of the new members of the Baseball Hall of Fame voted in on Wednesday are signing cards for Topps' real-time card program and two others voted in via the Modern Era committee will be inking up, too.

Jim Thome, Chipper Jones, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell also will all have standard cards printed to order after a 24-hour window.

One of the NBA's greatest teams has lost one of its greats.

Hall of Famer Jo Jo White who won two championship rings and was the NBA Finals MVP in 1976 as part of a 12-year career with the Celtics, Warriors and Kings has died after battling several health issues for years. He was 71.

"He was a champion and a gentleman; supremely talented and brilliant on the court, and endlessly gracious off of it," the Boston Celtics said in a statement. "His contributions to the team's championship legacy may have only been surpassed by the deep and lasting impact that he had in the community. The thoughts and sympathies of the entire Celtics organization are with the White family."

This year's Baseball Hall of Fame ballot has been released by the Baseball Writers' Association of America with several new names and players who appeared on last year's ballot but failed to get selected on 75 percent of the vote.

It's a crop that includes Chipper Jones, Jim Thome and Johan Santana among the newcomers and Larry Walker, Fred McGriff, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens among those left over from past ballots.

Below is the ballot that all BBWAA members will receive. The writers can vote for as many as 10 players. Those who appear on 75 percent of all ballots cast will be inducted into the Hall.

If you watch a Dallas Cowboys game, odds are you'll see him at least once -- typically after a win or some kind of replay that generated a reaction from the owner's box high above the 50-yard line.

But one thing where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn't often found is in packs of NFL cards but Panini America has a new rarity coming soon showing him as one of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Shaquille O'Neal took his place among the newest members of the Basketball Hall of Fame this past weekend and it's his shoes, which are now available via Steiner Sports, that show he's still one of the biggest.

A limited run of O'Neal's size 22 Reebok "Shaq Attaq" Pumps are available via Steiner and the sheer novelty of a shoe that large is a big part of the selling point.

So much so, Steiner also is selling them unsigned.
