A HOME RUN OF A SURPRISE
The Card: Hank Aaron 2021 Topps x Sports Illustrated five-pack ... Red (/5) parallel and standard cards (/2,057)
The Price: Direct from Topps ($29.99)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was my first grab from this year's SI set since this cover was one I was hoping to see in the release and I decided to take a shot at a five-pack for grading purposes. I was rewarded with one of the rarest parallels to find in one's order. Only the 1/1 is rarer and there are three other colors. (Just 111 parallel cards between all of them.) I've collected a number of cards that have commemorated Aaron's record-breaking home run back in 1974 but never graded any for condition reasons ... I might have two to slab now.

EPIC AUTO, EPIC BARGAIN
The Card: Joe Namath 2014 Topps Five Star Autograph
The Price: Under $70
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was one of my last eBay Bucks pick-ups last year -- I got it for substantially less than that bargain price -- and it's a perfect card with its auto, colors, thick stock that's not over-foiled and a retro photo that isn't perhaps perfect but works very well in conjunction with the ink. Did I need it? For this price I absolutely did ... though I have a few autos for the Hall of Famer. This is right up there as one of the nicest sigs I have and this should be an SP auto, too, though it's not numbered. I think Five Star ink is always worth a look, especially for NFL since we don't see it now. Meanwhile, Namath's place as a football icon is bigger than his place in the record book stats-wise these days, but he's a giant in pop culture of that time ... and is easily undervalued right now in a lot of instances.

(FULLY) LOADING UP 
The Card: Rhea Ripley 2020 Topps WWE Fully Loaded Green (/50) & Purple (/25) Chair Relic Autos
The Prices: Less than others have paid ... but high for me.
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The Green parallel here was one on my radar long, long ago when the teaser images from stars were teased online as they signed here. Ripley, now the Raw women's champ, is one of only a few younger stars in this release and was immediately on my radar when I didn't land any of her ink in my pre-ordered case. Meanwhile, the rarer Purple was a recent pick-up as it was bargain-priced compared to others out there on the secondary market. Her stuff is popular with the standard version the only card here typically under $100 on eBay, while the 1/1 version of this card recently sold for $1,000. Her autographs in other releases generally sell pretty well but I haven't seen others that high recently ... but I'm sure it's possible. Some Superfractors should be out there somewhere from Chrome and Finest. I'm not alone as a buyer, either.

LIMITED & LEGENDARY
The Item: Hank Aaron 2021 Topps Definitive Collection Defining Season autograph (/10)
The Price: $1,999.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The former all-time home run king was a steady low-volume signer for Topps and the high-end release that dropped today included these cards with on-card sigs and a clean, simple design that showcases the photo and ink quite well. We won't be seeing him in a lot of future releases after his death in late January but I suspect there will be some other appearances to come. (I don't think we'll be seeing any big volume of autographs on stickers to come, either, as I believe I was previously told he had stopped doing stickers due to vision issues years ago. But I could be wrong.) So far, he's got a good volume of sigs here and in Heritage -- and now is the time to grab them. Demand won't be lessened later.

CHECK HIS STATS ...
The Item: Akil Baddoo 2018 Bowman Chrome Blue Prospect Autograph (/150)
The Price: $149.95 Buy-It-Now 
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I didn't do a price check here to see how they have been selling or whether others out there right now are higher or lower ... but I did look at Baddoo's stat line this spring for the Detroit Tigers -- he's hitting .357 (10-for-28) with four homers and nine RBI in 15 games along with 11 runs and eight walks. Throw in two stolen bases and only nine strikeouts and that's one of the more-interesting spring showings right now ... from a guy who's likely nowhere near the radar of many or perhaps even sitting in some of your old ripped boxes. This 22-year-old former second-round pick has hit only .249 in four past MiLB seasons with one of his better years (2018) being one that had 11 homers ... but 124 strikeouts in 113 games. (Yikes.) It seems like there's some big improvement here, though he's not played above advanced-A ball. He could be a from-out-of-nowhere kind of player if he sticks with the Tigers and that appears to be a possibility. I wouldn't over-pay for his cards but he's worth watching ... remember Randy Arozarena last year? Basically half of Baddoo's cards are certified autos since his cardboard arrival in 2017 and he's found with ink in this one as well as 2018 Elite Extra Edition and Panini Contenders and then 2019 Bowman Sterling. That's it.

This one is a new department here on The Buzz ... Fast Five -- a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of five items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. For some of you, it's probably common sense. For others of you out there, it's perhaps something to ponder.

This time? Five Sports Illustrated covers I'd want on cardboard now in Topps' new card set ... and five more after that.

Junior goes home ... Ken Griffey Jr. | Feb. 21, 2000
It was a blockbuster kind of move, and, while Junior's first SI cover (May 7, 1990) might be in more demand, the portrait on this one would get my cardboard nod first in the new Topps set. Why? It's just a much better photo than his debut. I'm pretty sure I saved my copy of this one from back in the day ... so if there's no card I'll survive. Junior's days in a Seattle uniform seem get more attention than his time with the Reds and that's another reason I'd do this one.

THE DEMOLISHER 
The Card: Rhea Ripley 2020 Topps Chrome WWE Gold Refractor Autograph (/50)
The Price: About the price of a box
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This young WWE star from Australia is a strong seller in last year's releases and this is one auto I had to grab as Gold Chrome is a favorite color of mine -- at least in combination of appeal and price. They are rarer but not too rare to be way too expensive and this one was a bit underpriced compared to other copies. I sprung a bit more than I might have for this one -- but that's what happens when there's just not as much wax out there for me to buy. The cool part was that I landed a sweet surprise bonus with this one ... I'll show it off next time. Ripley appears to have arrived on the main roster during the last WWE pay-per-view and lasted about halfway through the Royal Rumble match ... finishing second. That indicates she should be primed for an interesting debut run and she has a persona that makes her feel like a six-foot-tall demolisher, though her look was still evolving at the time this card was made. Unlike some young stars, she actually has a number of autographed cards in 2020 releases and I'm pretty close to having locked down at least one from each of them ... and that's pretty strong for me as I just don't have the budget or patience to chase full rainbows. In other words, I'm sold.

This time? Five autographs I'd grab now

STARTING OFF DELUXE
Any 2017 Patrick Mahomes autograph
We'll start off with the super-pricey option here but it's not about the money with this choice ... it's about what may not be coming back ... at least for the time being. Patrick Mahomes' second Super Bowl could further launch demand for his autographs in general but if I were to chase one (with any size of pockets) it would be something from his rookie season for cardboard, 2017. Why? His handwriting and his autograph has changed a lot since then -- you can make out a "Patrk Mah" above, but that's light years above what it's now ... more of a P-line-curl-line-curl (at right from a 2020 card). Part of that change is just demand for his time -- a faster sig is inevitable and needed -- and some of this pick of mine comes from the fact that the more he wins and the higher his profile gets, the lower-volume his autos will get while the fees to sign (for his time, also in high demand) also rise. It doesn't happen often, but there's a chance this sig could intentionally revert back ... but I doubt it. Maybe in 20 years, he'll sign more and have a full sig ... maybe ... if he does signings at all. (It would be more choice than for the cash with his record contract, that's for sure.) I'd look at 2017 Elite Draft Picks autos perhaps first here even if they are college uni and stickers -- there are some fuller sigs to be found. Of course, right now everything is pricey ... eBay asking prices for premium 2017 autos are in six-figures ... but this pick is about the ink, not the card. I'd stick to cards ... and avoid all of the illegal (fake) reprints, too.

MLB has lost one of its icons.

Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, who hit a record 755 home runs as a model of record-setting consistency, died Friday at age 86, according to his daughter.

"Hammerin' Hank" arrived in the majors at age 20 in 1954 and never left as he was a legend even after his 23-year career as a Brave and a Brewer was over. He surpassed Babe Ruth's 714 home runs on April 8, 1974, and that mark stood until Barry Bonds topped it with his 756th on Aug. 7, 2007. Aaron retired from the game holding 23 records still holds the all-time RBI mark (2,297) in a career that never included any 50-homer campaigns and had just two batting titles and a single MVP award. He won a World Series ring at age 23 with the Braves in Milwaukee (1957) and played in the Series again the following year but never again. He won three Gold Glove awards and was a 25-time All-Star before he was a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee in 1982.

“Hank Aaron is near the top of everyone’s list of all-time great players," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "His monumental achievements as a player were surpassed only by his dignity and integrity as a person. Hank symbolized the very best of our game, and his all-around excellence provided Americans and fans across the world with an example to which to aspire. His career demonstrates that a person who goes to work with humility every day can hammer his way into history -- and find a way to shine like no other."
