Real cards in real time -- or at least the next day. It was a simple idea that became Topps Now that has helped in some ways transform collecting beginning on April 3, 2016.

Need proof?

There are 1,184 different Now cards now for MLB alone -- some with autographs and game-used memorabilia from the games that are depicted on the card. There are also Topps Now cards for last year's election and presidential debates, Now cards for WWE and for UFC and even real-time cardboard releases from AMC's Preacher and the Garbage Pail Kids taking on real-time scandals and viral curiosities. Oh, and there are other companies in on the real-time card business now for the other leagues, too.

As the reigning National League MVP and a member of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, Kris Bryant is on top of the baseball world right now.

And that place in the game comes with signing a lot of autographs -- and when it comes to baseball cards an exclusive deal to sign only for Topps' products.

"It's not too demanding for me. I feel like I'm kind of used to it now and I try to take the time for the fans to sign for every game and sign some autographs. My arm is used to it," he said on Wednesday as part of an event held at MLB Network headquarters in Secaucus, N.J., to note the arrival of 2017 Topps Series 1. "Winning the world series and having the year that we did. All of this comes with that territory, and I wouldn't have it any other way honestly."

Although the MLB Network has its share of Hall of Famers like John Smoltz, "Rookie Cards" for some of the other names who bring you the highlights begin arriving on Feb. 1 in packs of 2017 Topps Series 1 baseball cards.

A 10-card release begins a set that will continue in Series 2 and Update later this year and this series will include Lauren Shehadi (RC), Kevin Millar, Mike Lowell, Greg Amsinger (RC), Ryan Dempster, Sean Casey, Harold Reynolds, Dan Plesac and Smoltz as well as an MLB Tonight card.

A number of that crew's members already have cards as players (click to view a Buzz archives piece) -- but there will be several debuts in the forthcoming releases. Meanwhile, a number of them haven't had many autographs and all nine found in Series 1 will have ink.

Topps' priciest brand of baseball cards -- 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection -- included more than 50 autographs inside each of its silver briefcases but even more with the contents of one envelope.

They also included an invitation to a party with the reigning National League MVP, Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, and that soirée was Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

With 52 autographs in every box -- as well as a posh party invitation -- it doesn't take a lot to see the dollar signs inside each $25,000 box of 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection baseball cards.

Those invites alone get a good chunk of change back (details here) and each case's 1/1 Kris Bryant autograph using one of the 65 historic Topps designs commands some, too. Those cards have sold for as much as $2,182 on eBay (so far) and all seven sold have gone for at least $1,000.

Meanwhile, the asking or bid prices in current auctions are over the $1,000 mark in all but one instance and range as high as $7,250 for those in the historic set.

But the priciest find found inside one of those 65 silver briefcases? It's much more impressive.

The priciest box of baseball cards ever made, 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection, recently arrived packing 168 cards inside -- 52 of those autographed -- inside along with an invitation to a Jan. 18 party in Las Vegas to meet reigning National League MVP and World Series champion Kris Bryant.

That invite is arguably the big-ticket guaranteed item in every box and it includes hotel accommodations in Vegas, cocktails, dinner and a special gift in addition to meeting Bryant. To some fans, it's the item to own. So far, nearly 10 percent of the 65 passes have sold on eBay, selling for as much as $5,499.99 (in tandem with another card) and one of them can be found over on the mothership. How much? The priciest box of baseball cards ever made, 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection, arrives today with just 65 metal briefcases packing 168 cards -- 52 of those autographed -- inside along with an invitation to a Jan. 18 party in Las Vegas to meet reigning National League MVP and World Series champion Kris Bryant.

“Going to an event like this is every sports fan’s dream,” said David Leiner, Topps' VP & GM of the North American Sports and Entertainment Division. “You can’t get this type of experience anywhere else. Whoever gets to go to the event will meet Kris Bryant in an intimate setting and talk to one of the best young players in today’s game. It’s going to be amazing.”

Every box of Transcendent Collection includes an invite and that includes accommodations, cocktails, dinner and a special gift, according to the company.
