The Card: Patrick Mahomes 2017 Donruss Rookie Card
The Price: A variety of eBay asking prices between base and parallels
Why It’s Buzzworthy: Today's modern card collectors have tons of choices -- it's not like the old days where a player had one, maybe two Rookie Cards in a year. But, if you had to choose which of Mahomes' RCs is the most iconic the simple one, Donruss, might get that nod from many collectors. Today's top QB appeared on roughly 2,000 different cards back in 2017 and that's thanks to plenty of inserts and parallel cards in plenty of releases. Of those, almost 40 qualify as a RC by the standard definition and Donruss -- or maybe its higher-end brother, Optic (at right) -- are arguably the iconic cards where many can afford to chase. If you don't have one, it can be as easy as grabbing a Donruss factory set that guarantees you can land Mahomes -- and everybody else.

A top college basketball star is joining the Panini America team.

LSU Tigers star Angel Reese has signed an exclusive autographed card and memorabilia deal and it was revealed Wednesday morning by the Irving, Texas-based company. It's the second exclusive deal with a female athlete for the company, according to Panini, with Iowa's Caitlin Clark its previous signee.

"Angel is an outstanding talent and an electric player, and we are excited to welcome her to the Panini family as an exclusive athlete," said Jason Howarth, Senior VP of Marketing and Athlete Relations. "We look forward to offering her fans Angel's trading cards and memorabilia."

This one is a quick idea for a new department here on The Buzz ... Fast Five -- a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of five items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. Remember last year when the Giants picked Daniel Jones sixth overall in the draft out of Duke and plenty of people had plenty to say about it? Remember how Jones played last year? Those things may not really apply here, but beyond the obvious big names I think the Packers' trade up to get this Utah State QB might have stole the show chatter-wise and that should translate into attention for his football cards. The obstacle that is future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers might scare some people off of his cards, but we may have a while before game action determines anything this year.

THE TOP GUY ... 
The Card: Kyler Murray 2019 Panini Prizm Contenders Optic Mojo College Ticket autograph (/15)
The Price: $1,250 opening bid (six days remaining)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This card is perhaps a tad confusing ... it's a Contenders Optic card from Prizm and there's one in Prizm packs, too, but that one is not serial-numbered to 15 according to the checklists. Either way, this is a big pull and it's got on-card ink of the guy who went first in the 2019 NFL Draft last night and also the Heisman winner who is the only player ever taken in the first round of both the MLB and NFL drafts in the same year. There's a lot of attention and storyline here -- especially with the added Josh Rosen drama -- but he might be the biggest name of the bunch drafted so far when it comes to cardboard. (At least until everybody suits up.) This is an actual auction instead of a Buy-It-Now with new-car pricing attached, so we'll see how much demand there is here in a few days.

A SUPER SELLER SO FAR
The Item: 2018 Cryptozoic Supergirl Season 1 Melissa Benoist autograph (Supergirl version)
The Price: $480 after 11 bids with five-plus days remaining
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This latest arrival and the first for The CW series has a number of autographs to watch but none are bigger than those signed by Supergirl herself -- and Melissa Benoist actually has at least three different cards for collectors to look for. So far, three of her autos have sold for $999.50 or more on eBay and her rare dual-wardrobe cards found in this one -- what looks like one blue suit swatch and one red cape swatch -- also has pushed $800. This one is a live auction so it should be interesting to see how this one ends. The other big sales have been Buy-It-Now or Best Offer sales -- and the asking prices are higher than $1,000 for the active auctions right now

RARE AIR 
The Item: An uncut sheet of 1986-87 Fleer basketball cards
The Price: $709 after 24 bids (with just two days remaining)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I've not heard of entire sheets being counterfeited but with the Michael Jordan Rookie Card (heavily faked) you never know ... but what we do know with this one is that it's not perfect but an uncut sheet with this card and this landmark set is impressive. The back of the sheet suffers from massive red ink staining so that's probably why the sheet wasn't cut and put into packs. What kind of other flaws might there be? It's not clear based on the auction images, but it generally looks pretty good on the front and it's the kind of cool impressive piece to frame and display for not only its Jordan presence but every other Hall of Famer Rookie Card that's on it. (It's not worth professional cutting with the back staining.) This one is dirt cheap right now but could go crazy before it ends.

A Pro Football Hall of Famer known for plenty of production during a legendary career, never winning the big one and being the subject of an iconic piece of American sports photography has died.

He's NFL and LSU legend Y.A. Tittle. He was 90 years old.

When he retired at age 38 in 1962 after a 17-year career with the Colts, 49ers and Giants, he was the NFL's career leader in passing touchdowns and yards. The two-time MVP racked up more than 33,000 yards and 242 touchdowns -- marks that still rank 35th and 25th in league history despite massive changes in the game since then. His 36 touchdown passes in 1963 were a league record until it was topped by Dan Marino in 1984.

A record-setting time in the 40-yard-dash figured to get Washington WR John Ross some extra attention with collectors this coming football card season.

Thanks to Panini Instant, that football card season starts now.

Panini America launched its 2017 Panini Instant NFL offerings today with a selection of NFL Combine cards that also include autographs from Ross and others.

One of baseball's top prospects is getting the call on Monday.

The Houston Astros will call up former LSU star Alex Bregman after a solid second season in the minor leagues where he's hit .306 with 20 homers and 61 RBI in 80 games between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno.

"We feel like this is a good time to add him to a good team," Astros manager A.J. Hinch told the Houston Chronicle. "We're rolling along pretty well. He doesn't have to come up here and be anything but himself and contribute at a couple different positions."

When Panini America's newest football card year kicks off with 2016 Panini Contenders Draft Picks next week, collectors will find five autographs per hobby box and plenty of talent primed for the NFL Draft all in their familiar school colors.

When the No. 2 LSU Tigers took on the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night, it was supposed to be a showcase game for the Tigers' Heisman Trophy candidate Leonard Fournette, who has been a dominating presence this season with more than 1,300 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

What it turned into after a convincing 30-16 Crimson Tide victory over the previously unbeaten Tigers was, potentially, the national arrival of Alabama RB Derrick Henry.
