Fast Five is a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of five items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. For some of you, it's probably common sense. For others of you out there, it's perhaps something to ponder.

This time? Five strategies to still collect if you can't find brand-new boxes ...

FIND A NEW NICHE ...
No, I'm not starting a collection of Crazy Hot Dog Vendor "Rookie Cards" or a stash of (fake) ostrich cameos on baseball cards, but I wanted to lead things off here with something odd and attention-grabbing to make a point. You don't have to only collect the latest shiny new release like everybody else wants to -- especially if you can't (or in my case won't) camp out a few hours waiting for the retail aisle to "open" for your chance at the limit-two lottery. There are a ton of ways to collect out there that you can pull off on the cheaper side of things that aren't ripping boxes to see what you find. They can keep your collecting juices flowing between big-box breaks of the shiny new stuff if and when they happen. It may be a common-sense tip, but finding a niche within a wild world of big-priced possibilities can keep things sane for you in a crazy market. A new niche can obviously still be something simpler from inside those shiny new packs that others are taking the chance at ripping, too. Odd cards can carry more value than you might think ... like this Glenn Hubbard.

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.

Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...

REMEMBER ME?
The Card: Aaron Judge & Tyler Austin 2017 Topps Heritage #214A -- Rookie Card
The Reason Bought: I liked the price on this slab (under $13) so I bit on it about this time last year. Why? Well, he was a pretty big deal back when this one arrived and I've always had a thing for multi-player RCs from the vintage years of Topps baseball (vintage flagship or Heritage). I own more than a few copies of this one raw, but I figured grabbing it for less than it would cost to slab one was a bargain ... plus they were going for more than that at the time I grabbed it. The richer (or more dedicated) slab grabbers out there will find his solo variation or the autographed card of his from this release, but for the price I'm good with this version.
The Grade: BGS 9

Reality Check: I didn't check the pop report to see the huge divide between the 9-9.5 difference but the price divide was just as dramatic ... and I'm still fine having a BGS 9. Centering here is off on mine but the rest looks fine with no obvious issues. Why is this one batting lead-off? Well, with prices increasing out there to slab -- if you can slab at all -- I think simpler RCs like this won't be as easy/cheap to find (well, at least newly graded ones) and this is the time of year to grab some guys. I think Judge is a easy stash if you find him on the cheaper side and he's healthy.

LIMITED & LEGENDARY
The Item: Hank Aaron 2021 Topps Definitive Collection Defining Season autograph (/10)
The Price: $1,999.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The former all-time home run king was a steady low-volume signer for Topps and the high-end release that dropped today included these cards with on-card sigs and a clean, simple design that showcases the photo and ink quite well. We won't be seeing him in a lot of future releases after his death in late January but I suspect there will be some other appearances to come. (I don't think we'll be seeing any big volume of autographs on stickers to come, either, as I believe I was previously told he had stopped doing stickers due to vision issues years ago. But I could be wrong.) So far, he's got a good volume of sigs here and in Heritage -- and now is the time to grab them. Demand won't be lessened later.

Fast Five is a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. For some of you, it's probably common sense. For others of you out there, it's perhaps something to ponder.

This time? Five autographs I'd be chasing right now ...

LEGENDARY INK
Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- click here to see his autos on eBay
This NBA legend is on my daily saved eBay search because, well, I've taken too long to find one of his autos and they have really, really taken off. Why I hadn't landed one yet is because I'm just too picky -- I want an on-card auto with a clean sig and a relatively good photo for the former Lakers and Bucks star who has six championship rings, 19 All-Star nods, six MVP awards and still ranks first in career scoring, third in blocks and fourth in rebounds despite having retired more than 30 years ago. (What makes his 38,387 points even more remarkable? Zero three-pointers for his career.) He also was part of the legendary UCLA program with John Wooden -- he won NCAA titles all three years he was eligible and the Bruins lost just two games in his three seasons as a player -- and he is seemingly always a wise voice on social issues today (and that's not a new development). Another plus. His autographs have really taken off in price in recent years when I could have found a quality one for around just $100 not that long ago. He's been a steady lower-volume signer for years with more than 1,200 different options out there for fans ... and there are many apparently seeking them out. He can be found in many NBA releases in recent years with his highest volume of autos in high-end brands like Flawless, National Treasures and Eminence.

CHECK HIS STATS ...
The Item: Akil Baddoo 2018 Bowman Chrome Blue Prospect Autograph (/150)
The Price: $149.95 Buy-It-Now 
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I didn't do a price check here to see how they have been selling or whether others out there right now are higher or lower ... but I did look at Baddoo's stat line this spring for the Detroit Tigers -- he's hitting .357 (10-for-28) with four homers and nine RBI in 15 games along with 11 runs and eight walks. Throw in two stolen bases and only nine strikeouts and that's one of the more-interesting spring showings right now ... from a guy who's likely nowhere near the radar of many or perhaps even sitting in some of your old ripped boxes. This 22-year-old former second-round pick has hit only .249 in four past MiLB seasons with one of his better years (2018) being one that had 11 homers ... but 124 strikeouts in 113 games. (Yikes.) It seems like there's some big improvement here, though he's not played above advanced-A ball. He could be a from-out-of-nowhere kind of player if he sticks with the Tigers and that appears to be a possibility. I wouldn't over-pay for his cards but he's worth watching ... remember Randy Arozarena last year? Basically half of Baddoo's cards are certified autos since his cardboard arrival in 2017 and he's found with ink in this one as well as 2018 Elite Extra Edition and Panini Contenders and then 2019 Bowman Sterling. That's it.
