AEW ORIGINALS ... AS IN ORIGINAL ARTWORK
The Cards: Gummy Arts original T206-style drawings (1/1s) for Thunder Rosa, Orange Cassidy, MJF, Powerhouse Hobbs & Sting
The Price: Less than an AEW hobby box
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: If you don't know the work of artist Mike Noren -- aka Gummy Arts -- he's been drawing athletes or memorable pop culture characters in penciled cartoon-style reproductions of past cards or on new creations for years now. You can find constantly updating feeds of his work in timely posts over on Instagram or Twitter and then sometimes those get reproduced and sold as cards in packs. In other instances, he's let the original artwork go, too. Those vanish fast and can be pricey -- actually, his packs can vanish fast, too -- and for years now I've eyed the section of his site for original art (typically $50-80 depending on subject) that made it into cards. I had never found one that was must-have for me -- or at least found a must-have one in stock -- but one day after seeing a tweet of his I did my regular ritual and checked the site to find this set of five T206/Honus Wagner homages in one slightly pricier lot but had to grab them. I had remembered seeing the Rosa online but didn't remember any of these being made into actual cards. It turns out they weren't, so the only thing that exists f0r now (at least when I recently grabbed them) are these originals. Four are top AEW stars while one is an all-time great who has worked for every company ... really a no-brainer for me and I might have paid the typical full price for one or two of these. The Rosa card in a Tijuana jersey and others in their own Wagner-style threads made me laugh, while that Cassidy is not far from spot-on even in Noren's style. Poke around here on The Buzz and you'll see more of these ... just not in 1/1 original art form.

Fast Five is a quick list that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection or new focus -- five things that could be fun for a beginner or a new way to add something to your stash if you're a grizzled veteran.
This time? Five NFL rookies who are impressing Buzz this season (on offense).
THE TOP QB
Mac Jones -- QB, Patriots (Rookie Cards in 2021 boxes)
Trevor Lawrence got all the attention heading into the season -- especially on cardboard with his own standalone crd sets -- but while the yardage is there for him pretty much nothing else is impressive on the NFL rookie stat sheet this year or in the standings. Mac Jones, though? The numbers are there as him being the top rookie QB of the year so far with 245 of 349 passes completed for 2,540 yards and 14 TDs with just eight picks in 11 games. He's 399 yards ahead of Lawrence (who has only played 10 games and only has eight TDs). Jones isn't as mobile as, say, Lawrence or Justin Fields but the numbers are there and his team is atop the AFC East, too. Are the stats freakish like, say, Justin Herbert last year? Nope, but they don't seem to be unrealistic to show that he's done well and could be around for some time. He's expensive as an Alabama title-winner -- he'll always be popular in that regard -- so I'd be selective with grabs, but all those pricey cards could still have a big up-side if he's the franchise guy like people hope.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

ANOTHER BIG WEEK
Jonathan Taylor -- RB, Colts (Rookie Cards in 2020 boxes)
To me, this week was all about the ground game at least when it came to the standouts and that started with this guy's monster showing on Thursday night. He had 19 carries for 172 yards and two TDs in a 45-30 win over the Jets. If you're a regular reader of this piece each week, then you have seen him before -- and every time he has a big game like this there are fewer and fewer steals to be found out there as more and more collectors know his name. He's reached 100 yards four times this year and this was his best day, yet though he had a 145-yard, two-TD game last month. He's got 821 yards and eight TDs on the ground this year and had a TD catch as part of a 116-yard game last month. This former second-round pick is a must-grab if you're watching football cards right now though Marlon Mack's arrival and then poof should be kept in mind, too.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

A STAR OFF THE RADAR?
Kyler Murray -- QB, Arizona Cardinals (Rookie Cards in 2019 boxes)
He's put up big numbers in the past -- 7,982 yards and 50 TDs in his career -- but the opener was a big one as the Cardinals knocked off the Tennessee Titans 38-13 with him throwing for 289 yards and four TDs. Was that expected? Maybe, maybe not. (I didn't.) He's still pricey but my gut feeling is that other QBs from recent years might be getting a little more attention than Murray. Sure, he's pricey -- most younger QBs are -- but I think if you find some cheaper options here there is potential with a successful season. I think he's easily the top dog on his team for cardboard.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun ... or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
WORKS FOR ME
The Card: Dan Marino 1984 Topps #123 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Bought: I never really aspired to own a Dan Marino RC -- or a number of other notables from the past -- but this one presented itself on the cheaper side of things for this card (about $135) and considering how this one looks I grabbed it. Why? Go window-shopping for these cards raw -- it can be depressing to see how sloppy the printing and cutting can be for this set. (Want more proof of extreme possibilites? Click here.)
The Grade: BGS 9Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 238 415 649 1,156 1,518 1,883 1,617 628 347 68 0 8,864 Reality Check: I knew this was a strong grade for this card but I didn't look at the pop report for this heavily graded and iconic Hall of Famer RC. Just 415 check in at a higher mark out of nearly 9,000 graded -- less than 5 percent of the total grade higher -- and this one accounts for just seven percent of the total population for this card. My card isn't perfect -- there's a minor couple of spots in the black border line above "Dan" and some very, very minor specs here and there on the edges but at a glance there are not massive differences here vs. higher grades ... other than the fact that a BGS 10 copy of this card has sold on eBay for more than $4,500. I'll take mine all day long -- and getting a nine here is tough as it is.
Keep reading for more of this month's pick-ups and new slabs for Buzz.
Making the Grade (September): Joe Namath's ink, Dak & Jerry Rookie Cards, Saquon Barkley, Lonzo Ball, 1990s NFL classics, high-grade vintage, The Four Horsewomen of NXT & more

Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
The Card: Joe Namath 2015 Topps 60th Anniversary Rookie Reprint Autographs #T60RAJN
The Reason Graded: Buzz first met this NFL legend almost 20 years ago and landed the ink for free thanks to some luck while autograph hounding but when it comes to certified autographs of this icon I didn't have any until recent years. Why? He's always been a pricey auto but that has come down a bit as he's been a steady signer and doesn't have quite as much hobby heat as the guy at the end of this month's list. This release was how Topps burned off its Hall of Famer autographs via packs on its website once its NFL deal was done, so the influx of big-name autos helped make the supply even stronger at the time perhaps without added demand. I scouted them all where I buy and this one looked near-perfect to me in both its centering and that ink. Seriously, look at that signature ... that's a perfect Namath auto.
The Grade: BGS 9.5/10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 19 52 1 0 73 Reality Check: I absolutely thought I had a BGS 10 contender with this one, though I submitted it before I picked up my better loupe and I probably didn't check the back as closely as I should have. Either way, it's still a very solid card in my stash. I don't grade autographs all that often -- I fear results I won't like on those -- but this one I had to. Most of them landed this grade with only one higher so I don't feel bad about not landing a 10.

THE MOUTH OF THE SOUTH?
The Card: Paul Finebaum 2017 Topps Allen & Ginter Framed Mini Autographs
The Price: $9.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: When it comes to college football, Buzz is pretty much SEC or nothing. The SEC Network wasn't around with this guy at the center of a lot of things when Buzz was around there, but he was still all over the place back then. Who's Paul Finebaum a small few of you might say? He's one of ESPN's top names covering the college game on the Network, though he's been a big part of radio and newspaper scenes for years covering the SEC. Finebaum's only card appearances are limited to a literal handful of autographs in this baseball set that often includes media personalities and he has no standard cards. Podcaster James Andrew Miller said this of him: "Paul Finebaum knows the American Southeast like Jay-Z knows Brooklyn. And that's a big blast of wind at your back if your job is covering college football. His instincts as an interviewer rank him in the top tier of the sports world. And he is beyond mere savvy when it comes to speaking very virally." While I'm not the biggest fan, it's a unique autograph and one that a lot of non-collectors would want if they knew it existed. I finally grabbed one since it was cheap.

DEREK JETER'S CLEATS
The Item: Derek Jeter 2018 Topps Diamond Icons game-used cleat card (1/1)
The Price: $210.50 after five bids (with five-plus days remaining)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is a one-of-a-kind crazy card with the bottom of one of this future Hall of Famer's cleats embedded into the piece. These rare pulls came from a high-end brand that's loaded with nothing but hits and these are among the most-unique cards Topps has ever made. Simple as that. It will be a fun auction to watch, though for my personal tastes I might just chase a common player's cleat -- or a complete Jeter cleat. (I think it might get that kind of pricey with this auction.)

Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but a new year's resolution just might be to rip fewer blasters this year and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention. Would they capture yours? I'd be interested to know -- sometimes they might, sometimes they won't and that's fine. It's a buyer's market out there with plenty of options and bargains as well as high-end gems to chase. So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around they're not all on-the-cheap additions.

HISTORIAN CARDBOARD HISTORY
The Card: John Thorn 2018 Topps Archives Purple Fan Favorites Autographs (/150)
The Price: $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Buzz first knew his name back in 1989 when the massive book Total Baseball was a key way to look up past MLB players' stats -- you know, before the Internet -- and you could find a bit of everything else from the rules of the game, baseball history and more inside. Thorn has a ton of credits since then, including a consultant on the landmark Ken Burns documentary Baseball, and he is a winner of the Henry Chadwick Award, which is the top honor from SABR. Since 2011, Thorn has been the official historian of Major League Baseball and he has credited baseball cards as one way his interest in the game was sparked when he was young. He's also a collector. Believe it or not, he has a past card appearance in the 1990 Little Sun Baseball Writers set (an obscure release that's tough to find), but his cards in Archives can be landed somewhat easily despite there not being a lot to go around. He only appears on autograph cards -- a standard card and then Purple (/150), Silver (/99), Blue (/25) and 1/1 Gold parallels. The stock on these cards is way too thin, so you will see flaws easily -- especially on bold-colored versions -- but I grabbed this one because it was about adding the ink. Archives has included a number of unusual autographs with ties to the game in recent years and this one was on my to-get list from the start.

"It's like déjà vu all over again" was a Yogi Berra saying, but it might be heard in Philly right now, too.
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles returned to Super Bowl form in place of an injured Carson Wentz again on Sunday and put up a league-leading 471-yard, four-TD game against the Houston Texans, winning 32-30.
Foles' Rookie Cards and first autos can be found way back in 2012 boxes (click here to search for his autos on eBay) and he's got a relatively modest number of autographed cards for a modern veteran -- fewer than 900 -- that could add to the chase if the defending Super Bowl champs pull things together and have another run at it with this guy leading the way.

Did the Cleveland Browns arrive on Sunday?
That seems like a possibility as they knocked off the Atlanta Falcons 28-16 with a dominating day from rookie running back Nick Chubb who was one of the team's biggest stars on Sunday. His biggest highlight was a 92-yard touchdown run that set a new franchise record and was the second-longest TD run by a rookie in NFL history behind a 97-yarder from Pittsburgh's Bobby Gage back in 1949. He had 176 of the 211 rushing yards for the Browns and he also added three catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. This is the fourth straight week where he's had 18 or more carries and it's his second 100-yard game of his career.
When it comes to cardboard, Chubb's Rookie Cards are still probably overshadowed by fellow rookie Baker Mayfield, but continued performances like this one could give them a run for their money. Both have a heavy presence in this year's boxes with Chubb already appearing on more than 1,200 different cards -- and nearly 800 of those are certified ink. >>> See his autograph cards here

It's something we haven't (yet?) seen in a trading card, but post-game celebration confetti isn't just fodder for random eBay auctions any more.
With a new NFL season here, Buzz was curious if any new memorabilia or other pieces had popped up yet via Fanatics, which helps bring new game-used, Rookie Premiere-used and autographs to the masses when they're not found in packs of cards.
And that's when I found this unique gem of sorts. It's a 10-inch tall display for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and its the home of a capsule of post-game confetti from Super Bowl LII. It's a $99.99 item ... and it's not alone.
