This year's National Sports Collectors Convention is set for Aug. 1-5 in Cleveland with a meaty roster of autograph guests signing for those who opt to get a ticket and get in line for an "inkredible" moment.
Some of those signers are actually free if you're at the VIP reception on Wednesday or buy a VIP ticket package -- a bonus for taking the time to hit the entire show or buy the full package for all of the other bonuses -- but other signers will take some planning to land the ones you want.
It's tough to see everything at the show -- it's that big -- and the time it takes to work through autograph lines is valuable in that it impedes your shot at seeing it all. With that said, here are my picks -- one per day -- to grab off the autograph list. (Keep reading for the full signers list in a gallery at the end.)
Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) -- Ickey Woods
In 1988, this Cincinnati Bengals star ran his way to the Super Bowl as a rookie but the "Ickey Woods Shuffle" didn't happen in the big game, despite it being a close one. He was a 1,000-yard phenom that season with 15 touchdowns and his iconic dance that helped him land on the cover of Sports Illustrated. An injury derailed it all as he was retired by 1991. The photo above comes from his classic Geico commercial where he puts those shuffling skills on display today. He's $29 for any auto with a free inscription -- this one may or may not qualify -- but "Get some cold cuts!" would help make for a unique item if you can replicate it at the show. (Here's a high-res image that just might work to print.) If not, I might go for the SI cover, though that's not nearly as unique.
Wednesday runner-up pick: The Hanson Brothers from Slap Shot ($60 for all three).
Thursday (12:45 p.m.) -- Randall Cunningham
This iconic Philadelphia Eagles QB was one of the NFL's biggest stars for a few seasons as well as a league MVP with highlight-reel throws and runs that still hold up today despite the game changing a lot since his prime. I don't recall Cunningham being a regular signer at past shows, so that's an added plus here. He's just $70 for any type of item -- a big plus if you're thinking a premium piece like a helmet or jersey -- with $25 for inscription or personalization. Photo ops are also $70, which is a lot lower than a number of other big names at this show.
Thursday runner-up pick: Jim Kelly ($99 and up).
Friday (2 p.m.) -- Dale Murphy
There are a ton of big signers on this day but a lot of the big names cost dramatically more than what it might take to find a certified auto -- that's the premium you pay for meeting someone at a show. There are elite signers and stars from a number of sports among the lineup (see gallery with full schedules below), but I'm going with an affordable pick here ($39 for flats, baseballs, mini-helmets or caps; $49 for all others) with the future Hall of Famer and Atlanta Braves icon of the 1980s. The 1983 NL MVP was a seven-time All-Star and a five-time Gold Glove winner and hit 398 homers in 18 seasons, twice leading the league. That $49 fee is a good value if you pick something nice (helmet, bat, jersey, etc.) to get signed. (His photo ops are $99.)
Friday runner-up pick: Deion Sanders ($100 and up).
Saturday (4 p.m.) -- Corbin Bernsen
& Tom Berenger
The profanity-laced perfection that is Major League gets a nod with this show in Cleveland as two of the top stars will be on hand and signing at the same time. Sure, I could have picked the pricey Albert Pujols (the biggest star this year at $299 and up for autos and $299 for a photo op without ink), but adding Roger Dorn and Jake Taylor autos to the stash is something not as easily done. (Pujols has plenty of certified autos you can chase. These two? Not so much.) These guys are $49 apiece for their autos on any item -- also among the cheapest signers of the event -- with $19 for an inscription unless you want "Strike that mother-*#‡@!* out." That one will cost you an extra $39. Update: It appears Berenger had to cancel his appearance.
Saturday runners-up: Jim Thome ($169 and up) and Barry Sanders ($135 and up).
Sunday (12:30 p.m.) -- Mike Tyson
Tyson's autos aren't that cheap ($159 for flats up to 11-by-14) at a show, but there are a number of pop culture possibilities here that make for a talker of an autograph. His non-boxing appearances include The Hangover, some very key WWE moments, an Entourage episode, Rocky Balboa and, of course, a best-selling Nintendo game. The key is finding the interesting item from that mix. Tyson will not sign original fight posters or artwork so Buzz is hoping that Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! screenshots like this one qualify as photos. (If not, you can hunt around and find them already signed for less than his show fee.) You won't get an inscription from Tyson (doesn't sign them) and photo op is $159.
Sunday runner-up: Julius Erving ($139 and up).

Tyson is a tough call, as it would be cool simply to meet him. However his price is a bit high, as you mentioned you can easily grab his auto at the show from a dealer for much less. Heck there are some nice 16x20 frames photos of the Nintendo shot for around $100. So I would pass on getting it signed myself and simply buy one from a dealer.
