This 1961-62 Fleer NBA box shouldn't exist all these years later -- but it's on auction block right now

This sealed box of 1961-62 Fleer basketball cards really shouldn't exist at this point more than 50 years after it was made, but it does and it's worth a tad more than its original price of just $1.20.

(Yep, that was just $1.20 for the whole box.)

It will be selling for a tad more than that soon as it's among many high-end items up for grabs in the current Robert Edward Auction. How much?

After 17 bids -- and with more than 24 days before the auction ends -- it sits at $40,000. The auction opened at one-fourth of that amount not that long ago.

The box has been examined by Baseball Card Exchange's Steve Hart, who is an expert in vintage material, and it has some surprises guaranteed to be inside as three of the 24 packs showed Rookie Cards of Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor on top. The set also includes cards of Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and Lenny Wilkens among others.

REA sells plenty of "shouldn't exist now" pieces in its showcase event but this is one brand that the auction house has never sold by the box before. And, realistically, it may never sell another one of these boxes again -- there simply can't be that many left.

Would love to know if the person who buys it keeps it sealed or opens it and sends the cards for grading.
