It's no secret that original comic book art has exploded in demand and value in the last decade or so and that dominance continues near-daily with one-of-a-kind pieces trading hands both privately and on the auction block.

But sometimes the examples that command big money aren't classic first appearances from the past or the work of artists on the Mount Rushmore of past greats.

Sometimes they're the from the masters of today -- and one such example is on the ComicLink auction block right now.

This piece is the cover of Batman No. 618 back in 2003, and it's a creation from Jim Lee and Scott Williams as part of their "Hush" tale written by Jeph Loeb. It's also the only cover from that run to include the character known as Hush, which debuted nine issues before this one. He's in the penciled background of the montage for this cover, which comes with an overlay of the nameplate and other cover basics as part of the auction.

For collectors who were around in the 1990s, Lee should be a very familiar name -- and it's that base of fans and those who have carried through to today that help bolster the demand for works like this one.

After 66 bids, it's sitting at a cool $51,500 -- with more than a week remaining in the auction.

Not bad.
