With these Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud stories I'm turning just a tiny bit of that energy just a few degrees away from cards (we'll still have plenty of them here) for a different kind of cardboard. What am I doing? Simple ... this is an occasional dip into some random ticket lots -- a show and tell showing something small with a story.
This time? A college football throwback with a big name in the headlines.
Keep reading to see the details this time ... and tell me if you think it's a Ticket Stud or a Ticket Dud.
THE DETAILS ...
The Category: College football
The Event: USC Trojans vs. Stanford Cardinal -- Sept. 6, 2014
The Results: Trojans 13, Cardinal 10
The Attendance: 50,424 at Stanford Stadium
The Face: $75
The Cost (for me): Literal pocket change as part of a lot.
The Ticket Studs (Key Players): Stanford freshman RB Christian McCaffrey -- didn't play but second career game. (He's the key player in the here and now.)
Others: Stanford QB Kevin Hogan, USC RB Javorius "Buck" Allen, Stanford WR Ty Montgomery, Stanford TE Austin Hooper (second career game), USC WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (second career game), USC WR Nelson Agholor and even Stanford RB Barry Sanders Jr.

What's Buzz-worthy: With McCaffrey's surprising trade back to California to play with the San Francisco 49ers, I remembered I had a few Stanford stubs in my mystery box and, what do you know, this is from his second career game in college -- but he didn't play. (Cool! ... OK, not that cool.) But there were enough other NFL names here also -- some also in their second games -- to make this one more interesting. ... Note there are no stats mentioned above -- it's a who's who of NFL names -- but was a pretty lackluster game on the stat sheet with the yards and the scores all over the place. Hogan threw for 285 yards but the only score was a two-yard Patrick Skov run. Allen rushed for 154 yards but the guy who ran it in for the lone TD on that side was another fullback, Justin Davis, who was also another of many other eventual NFL guys here. The rest of this game was field goals. Among the other names on the stat sheet? Smith-Schuster had just one catch for negative yardage while, Agholor had nine for 91, Montgomery had nine for 83 and Hooper had four for 61 ... but all goose eggs on the TD column.
Stud or Dud? I like the fact that it's a second-career game for a top guy and a couple others who are notable (and maybe more if I had time to click around this morning). It doesn't hurt that that's Ty Montgomery on the ticket and he had a respectable game, either, but it's not the best visual package overall. For the names attached, Stud. For the game? Not so much but overall I don't mind this one for my cost. It seems like there are enough names here it should be of more interest than mere pocket change.
