With these Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud stories I'm turning just a tiny bit of that energy just a few degrees away from cards (we'll still have plenty of them here) for a different kind of cardboard. What am I doing? Simple ... this is an occasional dip into some random ticket lots -- a show and tell showing something small with a story.
This time? Two that mattered and two that didn't ...
Keep reading to see them and the details this time ... and tell me if you think it's a Ticket Stud or a Ticket Dud.
THE DETAILS ...
The Category: NBA Playoffs
The Games: Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Clippers -- April 19 & April 21, 2019 Western Conference Quarterfinals + two Western Conference Semifinals games that never happened
The Results: Warriors win 132-105 & Warriors win 113-105
The Attendance: 19,068 both games
The Face: $TBD (season ticket booklet)
The Cost (for me): Literal pocket change ... less than a stamp.
The Ticket Stud (Key Player): Kevin Durant -- 38 points in Game 3 and 33 points in Game 4
Others: Game 3 -- Stephen Curry (21 points); Game 4 -- Klay Thompson (32 points), Curry (12 points, 10 rebounds, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (career-high 25 points ... as a rookie)
What's Buzz-worthy: These were in a bulk lot I grabbed and aesthetically they're not all that and a bag of chips. If they were a pro wrestler they'd be named El Generico ... except, well, that would be an insult to El Generico. I'm not sure what regular Clippers tickets might look like but other than some matte and spot gloss effects here they're pretty simple. Granted, these were likely prepped for season ticket holders in advance (hence the TBD part and there being two for games never played as the Clippers didn't advance) but still. About the only saving grace here is that the tickets might look decent inked as there's plenty of space for a good sig ... but they wouldn't be for the home team. The Clippers had plenty of guys scoring in double-digits in both games as a depth showcase but these are all about Durant, Curry or Thompson beyond a strong Clippers rookie showing. The Warriors took a 3-1 series lead with these wins and it was over in Game 6, making the blue tickets meaningless. The Warriors went all the way to the NBA Finals and lost to Toronto with their big star joining the Clippers the next year.
Stud or Dud? I like the idea of tickets for games never played (phantom tickets) -- even more in postseason -- but these aren't all that uncommon. Had these had some advanced visuals on them or players featured they'd be a little more interesting. I'll do with "Dud-plus" since there are Hall of Fame-caliber names involved.
