With these Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud stories I'm turning just a tiny bit of that energy just a few degrees away from cards (we'll still have plenty of them here) for a different kind of cardboard. What am I doing? Simple ... this is an occasional dip into some random ticket lots -- a show and tell showing something small with a story.
This time? An MLB game from long ago with two teams stacked with history.
Keep reading to see the details this time ... and tell me if you think it's a Ticket Stud or a Ticket Dud.
THE DETAILS ...
The Category: Major League Baseball
The Event: New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers -- Aug. 19, 1989
The Results: Tigers 5, Yankees 4
The Attendance: 30,454 at Tiger Stadium
The Price: $10.50
The Cost (for me): Pocket change as part of a bulk lot.
The Ticket Stud (Key Player): Tigers SP and Hall of Famer Jack Morris with a victory and a complete game (eight hits, four runs, two walks, four strikeouts)
Others: Tigers: OF Gary Pettis (game-winning RBI in eighth), SS Alan Trammell (2-for-4), OF Rob Richie (two RBI); Yankees: OF Jesse Barfield (3-for-4, HR, SB, 2 RBI), SS Alvaro Espinosa (2-for-4, 2 RBI), 1B Don Mattingly (1-for-4)

What's Buzz-worthy: I pulled this one out of my mystery box since it's he oldest one in there by a pretty good margin and you can tell with its bare-bones look (only Ticketmaster tickets might be rougher) and its neon colors and washed-out team logo along with a machine-printed opponent name. It's easy to say we've come a long way for tickets in the years after this ... even if tickets aren't even made now. The price is also an ironic one as, well, I'm not sure you can get into a park for that price without some promotional specials ... plus the venue no longer exists and the team doesn't draw 30,000-plus per game now, either.
Stud or Dud? The ticket actually has a good amount of open space where a Jack Morris autograph would look comfortably nice and that thought alone here makes me feel like this retro ticket could be a stud with some ink. It was a rough season for Morris as this was just his third win of the year -- his first since May 12 of that year -- and he finished with a 6-14 record, but this was win No. 180 for his career. It's simple but sometimes simple can work.
