With these Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud stories I'm turning just a tiny bit of that energy just a few degrees away from cards (we'll still have plenty of them here) for a different kind of cardboard. What am I doing? Simple ... this is an occasional dip into some random ticket lots -- a show and tell showing something small with a story.
This time? One from a legendary franchise that's in the spotlight right now ... and one that went on to win it all.
Keep reading to see them and the details this time ... and tell me if you think it's a Ticket Stud or a Ticket Dud.
THE DETAILS ...
The Category: NBA regular-season game
The Game: San Antonio Spurs vs. Boston Celtics -- Feb. 12, 2014
The Results: Spurs 104, Celtics 92
The Attendance: 17,922
The Face: $40
The Cost (for me): Literal pocket change ... less than a stamp.
The Ticket Stud (Key Player): Tim Duncan, 25 points and nine rebounds
Others: No big standouts otherwise in this game.
What's Buzz-worthy: Pulling this one out of the ol' box seemed like it might have a highlight attached to it and with the Celtics tipping off in the NBA Finals tonight I figured "Why not?" Well ... both teams here are appealing and are often headline-worthy as they have plenty of titles in their histories, but this game isn't that big of a deal at all all these years later. One player had a monster game ... and there's not much else to look at now. Five Spurs scored in double-digits here -- Duncan, Marco Belinelli (double-double), Cory Joseph, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills -- and the Celtics had six with Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Kelly Olynyk (double-double), Jerryd Bayless and Kris Humphries. The Spurs had some top names -- Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard -- out or inactive, too, which didn't help here. The Spurs did go on to win the NBA title that year, so that's a plus here ... but not really on a Celtics stub. Aesthetically, this one has a good no-frills feel but has a clean team logo up top and logos for both teams ... so it could be worse visually. It all goes back to one guy here -- Duncan's big game came in the second half ... he only had two points at halftime.
Stud or Dud? All in all, this is a pretty standard ticket with a couple of Hall of Famers attached (on the Spurs) and a couple more likely ones (on the Spurs) so it's barely a stud this time ... but for pocket change I definitely could have done worse. It would be a better ticket if it was a San Antonio home game.
