Today is Friday but it's going to be unlike any other Friday we've seen before in the hobby.
It will be transcendent.
The priciest box of baseball cards ever made, 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection, arrives today with just 65 metal briefcases packing 168 cards -- 52 of those autographed -- inside along with an invitation to a Jan. 18 party in Las Vegas to meet reigning National League MVP and World Series champion Kris Bryant.
“Going to an event like this is every sports fan’s dream,” said David Leiner, Topps' VP & GM of the North American Sports and Entertainment Division. “You can’t get this type of experience anywhere else. Whoever gets to go to the event will meet Kris Bryant in an intimate setting and talk to one of the best young players in today’s game. It’s going to be amazing.”
Every box of Transcendent Collection includes an invite and that includes accommodations, cocktails, dinner and a special gift, according to the company.
The first boxes to be opened by BlowoutTV are coming up soon -- 10:30 a.m. Eastern to be exact -- at www.breakers.tv/houdini and you can witness them via a live stream at that time. (Update: A gallery of that case can be seen below along with some other hits of note so far. In some cases, we've also noted what cards have sold for.)
Every box of 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection will include one 1/1 Bryant autograph using one of the past Topps baseball designs like the 1989 card seen here, one more 1/1 auto, one 1/1 sketch card, one oversized 1/1 cut signature box-topper, 49 autographs limited to no more than 52 copies, one set of Iconic base cards limited to just 65 copies and one set of 65 reproduction sketch cards limited to 65 copies. Wow. So got maybe 5k in auto cards and can meey kris bryant worth 500. Yeah buy 5 mire cases. Well worth it. Total joke. If you soend 27k on this crap your a fool. Can do a lot better with 27k.
[…] most expensive box of baseball cards ever assembled. As the good people at BlowoutBuzz informed us, Topps released its 2016 Transcendent Collection on Friday, and even the most dedicated collectors might have a hard time justifying the […]
Way more than 5k in autographs Ron. Ebay these, they are actually selling well - there's a ripken at 500, griffey near 1000 with a few days left at auction (I don't look at buy it nows as those are often inflated). The ticket to the event is selling for close to 5000 (again active auction).
I'd say you can get your $ worth in a decent case (with good box topper autos and 1/1s). I'm not saying all cases but in all cards (not just transcendent) it's rare to find a box/case where you make more than you buy them for. If you have tons of $ and love baseball cards, it's a decent way to spend 27k. If you're just an average joe who is saving for a car/house/college, then it's a terrible idea but that isn't the target market for this set.
